Inspired by my post about how I am trying to accumulate more cables than I know what to do with the other day, I am cleaning out my cable box. Here is one of the many Converters That Should Not Be

Why do I have so many Ethernet cables? Wasn’t WiFi widely available by 2006 or whatever?

@stunt_bird Possibly some kind of debug port multiplexed onto a headphone jack. It might not even be a USB interface, just using that plug because it was cheap or convenient.Alternatively, it could be for some device that outputs audio over a USB port. The switching could be triggered by Vbus presence.

@stunt_bird I've seen a lot of freaky cables and I'm really struggling to figure it out. My guess is it came with the stereo, stereos always have bizarre cables. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@stunt_bird i have similar cables for serial console. I also recall something similar as a data cable for graphing calculators in the 90s

@phessler @stunt_bird i remember that too. though the usb to ti calculator cable “silverlink” has this big ol circuitboard in it. my guess is this is from a really cheap “universal charger” kit that just uses the phone plug as a connector to swap between different mobile charger connector modules.

@stunt_bird Yeah but Wi-Fi is almost always spotty and significantly slower than wired, especially at any sort of distance. We have a 200MBPS up/down connection over here and usually the WI-FI devices only pick up the full signal when in the same room as the router, but the minute you go into any other room the connection will drop anywhere from 30 - 75%Also Wi-Fi is less secure.

@stunt_bird Probably for cable management, maybe it could suction cup to a wall or a metal desk easily with that. It's for sure odd, but I could see it being useful.
