@garfiald that part in their navy recruitment advertisement where the narrator says "learn things your teachers didn't teach" or something along those lines over a shot of a machine gun being fired into the night was particularly chilling for me. And the way it was heavily circulated around exam and results time. Fuckin grim

@garfiald @Shrigglepuss I'll be brutally honest, were it not for the instituionalised racism (I'm not white) and my bad eyesight I'd have considered joining HM Forces myself during some darker times in my life, especially if I had been forced to quit my party/drugs lifestyle (as its harder to do both due to MOD drugs testing!), and I have reasonable qualifications and would have known exactly what I would be getting into

@garfiald I remember thinking about joining as a teen (thank fuck I didn't lmao, but I was too ill to get in anyway), I lived in an army town so old guys would walk up to you in the street and say "you look like the army type, they have a good pension you know!", and my step father would complain that he'd killed by my age and I'd done nothing yet, as if killing before the age of 20-something was a good thing o.o

@garfiald @Shrigglepuss I saw this docu a while back presented by one of those "baldy hardman" actors from Eastenders where they followed the Army, the one Asian lad there had been tasked to bait the Taliban by shouting over a microphone in their language, whilst above him all the troops that were supposed to be /protecting/ him were instead faffing around with encrypted radios that weren't working because someone had mislaid the keyfiller (so he had 0 proper defensive cover)
