This is a long article but one I'm highly recommending that you read.If you do nothing more, scroll down and watch the video about the Albatross on Midway island. I watched it, twice, and I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around what is happening there.Remarkable that the longest living bird in the world, estimated to be 60 yrs old, is still alive and giving birth to chicks.Screw global warming, this is reality and a disaster we must address ... now.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-great-pacific-garbage-patch-cleaning-up-the-plastic-in-the-ocean-60-minutes/

@Torchbearer Doesn't appear that anyone has come up with an answer that works to clean it up.I make fun of CA passing a no plastic straws and bags laws but I'm certainly going to curtain the plastics that I'm using. This is insane.

@Elaines2cents Actually a replacement for plastic bottles can be made from hemp and it’s supposed to be bio-degradable.....This problem affects us all and crosses all political party lines.....I wholeheartedly agree, something must be done and now would be a great time to start...Start with no drinks can be bottled in plastic in say what 12, 24, 36 months....start there...Trash is a world wide problem...

@Torchbearer A good point made during the interviews was cleaning it up closer to shore.I don't like paper straws but I love that someone was creative enough to come up with a replacement for the plastics. We need the same technological advancements for the other plastics that we use so that they can be changed out and the masses accept the substitutions.

@Elaines2cents @Torchbearer We had paper straws back in the late 50s, early 60s. Everything old is new again.

@Elaines2cents @Torchbearer Plastics replacing glass bottles was a huge mistake. Also replacing paper bags a huge mistake. It all came from the environmental movement and the plastic industry used that movement to persuade people that you could recycle all plastics. More glass got recycled than plastics do. And you can grow more trees for paper. Besides as a kid I could collect bottles and get money to buy me a drink and a candy bar.

@Elaines2cents It’s happening everywhere. Ghost fishing nets are another one. They float around the ocean killing everything. Also, fertilizers are catching up with us. Lots and lots of algae blooms all over the US, not to mention they actually degrade soil. It’s amazing how global warming has distracted from all of it.

@Elaines2cents 1...It’s a miracle of evolution that the albatross lives. When I was on the world’s seas sailing, I began to understand the immensity of lives lived apart from us humans. The albatross is a magnificent bird. It’s been soaring the world’s seas for millennium. Are we to be responsible for it’s demise? We consider it mostly inconsequential. It doesn’t affect our daily lives. We can hardly conceive of the freedom to live and breed in such simplicity and beauty.

@Elaines2cents They won't address the plastic issue. The perpetrators are the poor of Asia. There are no recycling programs there. Many of the products are those small, travel sized packages because they can't afford the family sized.

@Elaines2cents @Torchbearer Plastic straw bans are a leftist virtue signal: A perfect example of straining out gnats while swallowing a camel. Conservatives conserve. Leftists in power lack the wherewithal (let alone WILL) to enact comprehensive, sustainable reforms that are systemic, non-intrusive, and non-wasteful. They are in the business of creating the ever-growing problems that they pretend to be constantly solving.

@StevenDouglas @Torchbearer They've got a few creations that have run away from them this time. One only needs to look at CA and know that the Genie can't be stuffed back into the bottle no matter how they try.
