Hey everyone, is there a full list of instances that should be excluded from federation bots? (Write instances you know below this post) #mastoadmin #fediadminHere are the ones I know so far:anime.websitepl.wowana.mevulpine.clubkitty.town (not that it’ll prevent being defederated)(But I know there are many more)

@alexa Do you mean the one of mastodon.host?I do not think gled updates it that much anymore. He also moved instance to a pleroma instance at a subdomain of mastodon.host (iirc it's single user).

@ichiiI'm going to make a federation bot on my own instance, I want to know which domains it should not follow people from.

@alexa Ah okay makes sense.I would probably ignore bot-only instances such as botsin.space depending on what you want to track.Would the bot respect #nobot tags or ignore them like @federationbot ?

@ichiiOf course it'd respect #nobot, I don't want this bot to follow those who don't want it to follow them.I ideally want to track every post possible, I won't be blocking any instance other than spam (so Gab and other hateful instances will be allowed, as well as Sinblr and other porn instances). My goal is to have a full view of every post on the Fediverse, except for those who don't want their posts included.@federationbot

@alexa What would you do with so much information?Just make graphs of it like @usercount ?Or scrape information off of it?It would be somewhat interesting to run a text mining script and check sentiment analysis of certain topics and compare the results between Twitter and the Fediverse. Though it is going to be a bit hard due to the fact that hashtags are not used that much here.

@alexa > Possibly textual analysis but I know many people on the Fediverse don’t like thatMost of those that don't have the #nobot tag to be honest. If you are willing to share that information (anonymised of course) I do not see what harm it could do.Furthermore, all posts that are not posted as followers-only should be assumed to be indexed and scraped by search engines anyway (maybe you can disregard posts that are set to followers-only? I actually wish followbots wouldn't consider my followers-only posts).

@ichiiThat's fair. I'll consider it, but I know 2.distsn.org got widely blocked for doing harmless analysis, so I wouldn't like to repeat that.(Btw, is that why you have #nobot?)

@alexa I have #nobot because I have not yet researched extensively what kind of bots exist in the fediverse. So it's more of a "better safe than sorry" thing. Not that it would change much since malicious bots would just ignore it.I don't mind safe follow bots from following me. I trust mastodon.host's followbot enough for example, but I see that it appears under a lot of "bLoCk ReComMeNdAtIoN" lists.

@ichii interesting, ok. I haven't really seen any bots that will interact with you w/o being asked (the kind that should respect #nobot) except for federation bots and spambots (which don't respect it). Most bots just post pictures like #safebot 1girl

@alexa Well, not always, but most of the time. For example this status https://pleroma.soykaf.com/objects/96c46692-b7ac-44b6-9e37-e6e849c5560a appears empty on my instance, while it clearly is not.

@alexa Although here it sounds like the instance is just not getting updates instead of not fetching them?https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/9409Not entirely sure where the fault lies as I am not an ActivityPub expert.

@ichiiNah, that's not boring. I think you misunderstood how Mastodon works though. It's not that you can't fetch the replies, it's that they never got sent to your instance. This is normal.

@alexa Yeah, I've just realised.I'm still learning honestly. I joined around 2 months ago after all and this is the first time I am having to do with something that uses ActivityPub.Setting up my own instance sped up the process quite a bit, but I have a lot to learn still.

@alexa @ichii The list you have is way incomplete ( you can better consider that by default instances do not want followbots to follow their users ).Way better to subscribe to a relay... or you'll end up being blocked from many instances... this is the default behavior by many admins and it's well understood that new followbots are unwelcome, even that one is just ' barely accepted'...It was ok a couple years ago, now it is obsolete, relays are there for it.I did not retire the bot because code became an ugly spaghetti soup tied to the other functions, but I still hope to have the time to revisit the code and remove the autofollow function, it's not needed anymore.Plus you will never anyway get a full view of the fediverse, not that way at least ( 2 years after and still around 60-65% only reach here ) , and you need to consider the cost of something like that... the traffic generated is way above a single user instance...

@federationbotI understand your concern, and appreciate the information. My problem is, most instances don't subscribe to relays, especially those that aren't Mastodon/Pleroma (there's no Peertube instances on relays for example). What I'd like to do is custom write a relay using all of the public ingested posts, so any instance could subscribe to get a full view of the Fediverse, including non-Mastodon and Pleroma instances.@ichii

@alexa @ichii I can already see the backlash of such a project...Instances who do not subscribe to relays do it for a reason, I doubt they would like their posts to end up on one without their consent... Instances subscribing to such a relay probably do not know what it means it term of server power and data storage too, and many would end up unsubscribing for the amount of 'noise' it generates anyway...Plus you announce wanting to follow/propagate the racist and white terrorists instances.. which means your 'relay' would be actively hunted and blocked, as any project/instances associated.it's your time though, your choice on how you loose it...

@federationbotIdeally I’d have a few relays:EverythingEverything - loliconEverything - all pornEverything - racism, sexism, etcEverything - lolicon, porn, racism, sexism, etc (for legality in France)So while an instance might block the “everything relay” they wouldn’t want to block the last one.(And this is why I want a list of instances to not crawl now, to avoid that backlash)@ichii

@alexa I get the privacy, but what this says is you should only join an instance that has a very high likelihood of longevity. So other than Mastodon.social and that French one what ones are likely to be there for the Long haul?
