trying to recover files from a corrupted SD card and duckduckgo, google and package manager search is utterly failing me. nothing but paid utilities and services. i keep ending up looking at a utility called “dd-rescue” but there is zero indication that it does anything more than just copy the disk image. what is this about?

@zensaiyuki I find this page useful for help rescuing files it goes into pretty good detail on the various tools and what they are best suited for.https://forensicswiki.org/wiki/Dd

@redcrate that’s what I thought. so dd_rescue is just a robust version of dd, which means i just have the disk image, it hasn’t recovered any actual files. which will be more difficult now due to some dumb decisions I’ve made.

@zensaiyuki well, there should be other tools that can scan that disk image for files and can recover the data. I think the file carver foremost is what I used.https://forensicswiki.org/wiki/Tools:Data_Recovery

@redcrate *sigh*paid, paid, paid, windows only windows only, too limited. etc. i did find “the sleuth kit” which may help.

@JoYo @redcrate it’s not like I desperately need what was on the disk. I just wanted to try it to learn this stuff! and if i can recover anything off of it that’s just icing.

@JoYo a crappy one. the internal one on my macbook and also a cheapy usb dongle thing. DD_rescue didn’t report any bad sectors though.

@JoYo if i remember correctly, i was being clever and had an exfat formatted disk but kept most stuff in an encrypted dmg image

@JoYo performance wasn’t as much of an issue as data integrity. obviously a failed experiment there.

@JoYo what I’m trying to get at is a secure (as in ecrypted) and secure (as in durable against corruption) way to store some files on cheap media. sneaker-sync, fidobox, whatever you wanna call it.

@JoYo but that’s only tangentially related to the task at hand: this specific sd card. i am now compiling scalpel

@JoYo i get it. I have been faking it for 15 years. plenty of skilled developers who won’t touch a console. on the one hand, i too hate the idea of needing to use tech from the 1970s and think waaay better is possible. on the other hand how on earth do you avoid it?
