Mulling over, selfhosting a new #Indieweb and #openweb focused #mastodon instance on an old Mac at home, vs remote hosting on @mastohost or other. The main issue is I might want to customize things to make the instance the most #indieweb friendly possible.... Haven't even explored if that would require forking code, or can be done on a hosted environment.

@Tchambers both can work but probably forking will make it easier to maintain the changes during updates. Obviously it will depend on the level of changes you want to do.

@mastohost Thanks: am still sussing out what that might mean too. The instance itself would be exploring how to better evolve the #Fediverse #Openweb and #indieweb worlds... Was thinking it might also be a sandbox to experiment on how to do that with emerging standards....https://indieweb.org/Mastodon

@mastohost -- if we wanted to start in a fully hosted standard mode, and move to what is likely an only a "slightly" forked version, is that possible?

@Tchambers well, hosting with me I currently only support the “vanilla” Mastodon.I am not sure if you are asking in general or hosting with me.Hosting with me that would be possible by requesting a backup when you are ready to move to the fork and then hosting the instance yourself using the fork.

@mthld @kyzh @mastohost Very kind of you both to reach out! The idea might be to spur innovation and cooperation between #indieweb, #openweb, and #fediverse efforts in a way that might feed back into all three. Thinking that might need a fork, hoping it can offer features back into the main #Mastodon codebase. What do you think?

@Tchambers @mthld @kyzh well, it sounds good to me but I am not really involved in Mastodon development. But something like Glitch-Soc https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/ has been really useful and contributed with many features and tests that helped or made their way upstream.
