So I woke up this morning to the emails from eBay UK (ebay@ebay.co.uk) in my inbox. One congratulating me on signing up and two notifications of successful purchase.Except....I don't have and have never had any account with eBay UK.So I think they must be phishing emails, trying to trick me into clicking on something in the emails so they can scoop up my details or ransomware me. But an online search didn't come up with anything.

@SierraKiloBravo I usually get stuff like than when someone uses my email address by mistake. It is sad that companies accept unverified information like an email address and start bombarding you with messages.

@mhjohnson I assume this might be what has happened here, that someone has used my email address by accident. But like you say it seemed odd that there would be no two step sign up process. One thing that did make me suspicious is that while I was in the account, the address for this person was UK but the phone number was US.If that person is legit and just put in an incorrect email, they probably think they have been hacked. Oh dear

@SierraKiloBravo There's almost NEVER a verification step, it is too much friction for the new user.I always ask for verification when I complain to the company. I also tell them that they are sharing their customer's personal information to a third party (me) because they failed to verify.I've gotten data about so many things I can't recall them all.My favorite are messages from "do-not-reply" which has a footnote asking for a reply if you get it in error.

@SierraKiloBravo One more thing - to amplify the first point. Someone used my email address to setup an Xbox account. So Microsoft (who should know better) failed to do an email verification step.Mailing lists implemented by MAJORDOMO or other products did verification over 20 years ago. The only change I'd make now is to display a random token on the web registration page & ask you to reply via email with that code (preventing 3rd party takeover).
