I have all these neat little 8" IPS displays I ordered last month. A few of them are already destined for other projects but one of them I'm thinking about putting on this kitchen bar counter. This is just a mock up. I would like to find smaller keyboard that more closely matches the width of the display.

The plan would be to finally follow through on my "terminal computer" project I've been talking about for a while. A recap of that concept is: Display, keyboard, boots to terminal only with a custom setup/interface to make doing typical things I want to do easy. I may sully the purity of that concept though and have it show my home assistant dashboard when not being actively used.

@ajroach42 That is definitely something I've thought about! Would be able to spin it to see stuff from the kitchen side while cooking, hanging out etc..

@ajroach42 I have an Asus monitor stand base that swivels which is unused because the monitor is mounted on a desk mount that might work.

@kelbot Maybe I cand find them elsewhere for a better price. Those displays would also be perfect for a cyberdeck build. That idea is floating around in my head recently.

@drwho It's a lot more expensive than what I paid but this is the same display. They were on clearance on sainsmart.com when I got them.https://www.amazon.com/WIMAXIT-1280x800-Resolutions-Display-Raspberry/dp/B076M48HS5/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=8+in+ips+display&qid=1564774454&s=gateway&sr=8-13

@mgr They are pretty nice displays and great for mobile projects because they are 5v powered and have a good resolution for the size. I wish you luck finding a better price. $80 is too high IMO but if it were down near $50 regular price I'd still consider it.

@kelbot The cheapest ones I found are 66€ on Amazon right now, but it looks like they’re shipping from Shenzen, so a customs fee might add to that.I’m still considering though.

@mgr For a one off cyberdecke build it might still be worthwhile. There isn't much else out there that's 5V powered and that makes it much easier to work with in a build.

After taking some measurements I think I should give up on trying for a keyboard that same width as the display. It would be too small of a keyboard to be pleasant to use. A compact 65% will be good.

@kelbot I tried small keyboards again and again. You cal leave away the numeric block etc. But as soon as the keys get smaller than usual, it does not work on the long run. I simply cannot "type away".

@rudolf Yes. I can get used to a smaller keyboard if I use it daily but it takes time. I've done it before on netbooks but I agree, it isn't ideal. I think 65% would be as small as I can go. I still want arrow keys and home, end, pgup, pgdn.

@rudolf @kelbot It depends on how you plan on using it... It is probably not that good of an idea to work from that chair (in pic). You would probably be good with a bt keyboard (me thinking).

@shellkr @rudolf This isn't going to be a heavy use machine. More like short quick tasks here and there as a convenience. Plus, the counter is high and perfect for standing at which I prefer anyway.

@kelbot @rudolf Then I think a bt keyboard should do. With the plus that it is portable. Also.. kitchen is a pretty central place.. so looks matter. ;)

@shellkr @rudolf True. BT would be nice but the display won't be portable so I'm not sure how necessary that would be. I don't want to have to charge the KB too often if it is wireless.

@kelbot @shellkr Then a small one is fine. I have a tiny USB keyboard for firing up servers or Raspberries, it is fine for that but it never made it to everyday use, even though it is so cute :)

@kelbot @rudolf I was more thinking of convenience... you might want to have the keyboard in front of you while the screen is at that example position. Maybe you need it from the other side e.t.c...

@shellkr @rudolf Also all the compact Bluetooth keyboards I'm seeing have weird layouts and tiny arrow keys. The smaller mechanical keyboards have better layouts.
