Adding either a colorized grid or horizontal lines causes the brain to see a grayscale image as a colored one. This is known as the Munker illusion.

@CrabDemon yeah looks like it, and they probably used the original colors for the lines

@yogthos what? that's so cool!I would like to see the original images to see whether my brain came up with the right colors.

@yogthos @CrabDemon Take a look at the faces, the lines are bright red. I'm guessing the lines are extra saturated to make up for the desaturated pixels, so the average saturation equals the original photo's saturation.I bet if you blurred and shrank the illusion photo and the original, they'd look pretty similar.

@megaspel @CrabDemon ah yeah makes sense, the brain must be averaging out the color between the color and gray sections, so the color needs to be deeper to compensate

@yogthos @CrabDemon You just reminded me, I made a similar illusion with a batman model that flashes between red, green and blue. Hopefully the framerate isn't killed on mastodon.

@yogthos You probably have seen a subtler version of it without realizing. Some cheaper monitors will flash between two colours really fast to simulate a higher colour depth.

@gattogateaux I imagine averaging out colors is probably a core part of the visual system. But could be an effect similar to color blindness for example.
