Hi friends! Who would like to chat about fitting polynomials to histograms in python?

Basically, I have a histogram. It will probably not be anything like a normal distribution.I'd like to fit a polynomial, then find minima and maxima but also points where the slope is highest or what have you.At the end of the day all I really want is the x values where those occur, am I going about this the wrong way? Is there a name for what I am attempting to do?

@pagrus if I were in a hurry i'd probably just crawl through the list of values waiting for the direction to change and ship the indices off to a separate list.should only have to keep state of last value, and should be efficient enough to complete in a single pass through the list and a static amount of memory.the new list should contain all the min and max indexes in the histogram list.

@thurloat the histograms I'm thinking about will probably be pretty wiggly and I thought it would be better to smooth them out (debounce?) before trying to get maxima out of them. Probably 255 buckets, but maybe 1000 depending on how I set things upAlthough maybe I could just use your suggestion and group or cluster the wiggly parts, hmmmmThanks!
