Amsterdam to ban petrol & diesel cars by 2030:https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/03/amsterdam-ban-petrol-diesel-cars-bikes-2030How come we always have to rely on the Dutch to bring some sense to the table.

Just imagine. A beautiful city like Amsterdam without all the cars. Seriously can't wait to witness that.

@fribbledom They should really ban all kinds of cars* and not just petrol/diesel cars. Electric cars take just as much space, so they really don't have their place in any city. But that's a good start anyway.(* Usual exemption for disabled drivers and time-limited utility traffic apply.)

@fribbledom As a Dutch person, I want to say that our country is also a neoliberal hell hole and that us making sense is very relative. That said, it's a good proposal.

@fribbledom transportation should simply be a property of a city. simple as thatthe idea that people in a city should have to see to their own transportation is...unhinged"oh but choice" oh give me a break. there's ways of managing that anyway. most people just wanna get from A to B, we're not looking to own a substitute for a personality in the form of a car

@fribbledom Now try to imagine this with a city on hills instead. It will be nice, but its economy will fade, thus its importance and influence. Thus the impact of not having as many cars.Cities, and urbanization is the problem itself.

@fribbledom uhm... Most cars by then are going to be electric, so the effect won't quite be "without cars".

@isagalaev The city's current estimate is that one third of cars will be electric by then, but only the wealthier people will be able to afford them by then.

@fribbledom Actually they are just following Norway: https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/norway-to-ban-the-sale-of-all-fossil-fuel-based-cars-by-2025-and-replace-with-electric-vehicles-a7065616.html

@fribbledom Technically, the ban is on pollution emitting vehicles, so probably have to imagine Amsterdam with electric or hydrogen ones, I think.

@fribbledom I'd be so jealous of that. Brisbane's CBD would be an even more amazing city without cars at the center of it.
