11 months ago the CTO of ProtonMail told me that he was "pushing as we can" to open-source the proprietary paid bridge they use as a pathetic excuse for supporting standard, open protocols like IMAP and SMTP. Today it's still paid-only proprietary software.ProtonMail is a scam.

@sir I mean, Tutanota isn't any better in this regard -- yo ucan't imap or smtp at all, and have to use their electron app or website. :blobgrimace:

@sir Also, they __could__ support stuff like Thunderbird in combination of extensions like Enigmail (GPG for Thunderbird). But rather they have their proprietary apps & bridges.

@sir I am not the least bit surprised. The only real option is to host your own mail.

@lachs0r @sir which sadly half the time the big providers will just decide to drop mail from.

@josh @sir Fair enough, but only Google really does that in my experience, and only temporarily. And I suspect it happens to any and all email providers.

@sir The bridge isn't an excuse. If it was open-source, it would be perfectly acceptable.

@sir @josh Yeah it happens very rarely that they reject email for unspecified reasons (and resending will usually work).

@sir Not sure what you're talking about.ProtonMail is made for non-tech people. Telling non-tech people to setup PGP for their client is not possible. Thus a bridge is reasonable.

@eo @sir See this is a problem. There’s a million tutorials out there and several software packages to tie the hot mess that is mail server software together, but all of it sucks.

@eo @sir A fully integrated mailserver (i.e. virtual inboxes, STMP/IMAP, monitoring, etc.) with trivial setup and no nasty pitfalls is desperately needed. Not this UNIX garbage we currently rely on.
