@twee Gnus FTW 🙂 my setup is similar to [0] and it's been working great; the nnimap backend has been much smoother than nnmaildir in my experience.alternatively, try aerc [1], it's really good. i think maildir support is still TODO but otherwise it's great. i'd use that if i weren't on Gnus[0]: https://ericabrahamsen.net/tech/2014/oct/gnus-dovecot-lucene.html[1]: https://aerc-mail.org

@aminb i used gnus for a bit, and thought it was okay, but ultimately thought it ridiculoes that i had to have any programs installed on the system for it to work (as in, i can nicely view an ada file without gnat installed, why cant i easily view my mails purely by pointing to a maildir?)maildir is essential for me for two reasons: first because i stick all my rss into it too, and second because i have limited internet access so dont want to do everything server side.i tried to use aerc, infact i spoke to drew about adding maildir support, and did intend to, but i really didnt like go. also id prefer for it to be in emacs if possible.for now, im stuck simply using mutt :/ its not fun nor ideal but it at least actually works in a sane manner :)

@twee i see :)i mean gnus's nnmaildir definitely works, but in my experience it's not as smooth as nnimap.also, i do understand not wanting to install extra programs, and i mostly agree. but i've made a few exceptions to that rule, that's been serving me pretty well. for instance, i run a local dovecot imap server (like the link in my previous toot) and i also use msmtp for sending out mail.i could probably get away without msmtp if i wanted to, but i've been using it forever and it's basically available on every distro so i didn't bother :)and running a local dovecot has been a game changer, it's really great. i used to use maildir only too back when i was using notmuch, but with gnus, it really is great in avoiding slow operations on the emacs side.i've also been meaning to set up notmuch again to index my local imap server's maildirs and then rig it up to gnus for search, but haven't had the chance yet...

@aminb im not /so/ opposed to external programs, i feel like it makes sense for some of them, such as flycheck, or what started this thread, mpd.i see emacs (as many do) as an advanced text interface, and as such want to use it for anything which involves manipulating text. ive never felt that maildir needs an extra program though, and its just another thing to set up, but perhaps ill give it a go.with regards to msmtp - if i used it, would it hold all emails so that i can send them all at the same time? thats the part of my workflow ive been struggling with the most, ill definitely have to explore further if that is the case

@twee makes sense :) but yeah i think it's worth a shot. of course, the alternative would be *somehow* making nnmaildir as fast/smooth as nnimap :pre msmtp: yeah, that's possible; see msmtp-queue. it may be called msmtpqueue or msmtp-enque.sh or something similar depending on your distro. e.g., see [0] for the arch.[0]: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Msmtp#Using_msmtp_offlinein emacs, there are other ways to do this as well; including using gnus agent [1], gnus-delay [2] or smtpmail's smtpmail-queue-mail [3].[1]: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/gnus/Gnus-Unplugged.html[2]: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/gnus/Delayed-Articles.html[3]: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/smtpmail/Queued-delivery.htmlthinking about this, i may very well try switching to smtpmail, since i'm not using anything special from msmtp
