The days of OStatus are numbered. The venerable protocol has served as a glue between many different types of servers since the early days of the Fediverse, connecting StatusNet (now GNU Social) to Friendica, Hubzilla, Mastodon, and Pleroma. Now that many fediverse platforms support ActivityPub as a successor protocol, Mastodon appears to be drawing a line in the sand. In a Patreon update, Eugen Rochko writes:...OStatus...has overstayed its welcome in the code...and now that most of the network uses ActivityPub, it's time for it to go. Eugen Rochko, Mastodon creatorThe pull request to remove Pubsubhubbub and Salmon, two of the main components of OStatus, has already been merged into Mastodon's master branch. Some projects will be left in the dark as a side effect of this. GNU Social and PostActiv, for example, both only communicate using OStatus. While some discussion exists regarding adopting ActivityPub for GNU Social, and a plugin is in development, it hasn't been formally adopted yet. We just hope that the Free Software Foundation's instance gets updated in time!

@blog I wish they'd wait until GNU Social implemented ActivityPub.

@blog I can't really fault him for doing it, as it will be of no consequence for 99% of Masto users, but it's sad to see it go.For anyone wanting to stay in touch with the OStatus Fediverse while still being on the AP one, there's always Friendica, which even supports pure RSS and Atom without the WebSub or ActivityStream addons.

@jpfox @blog yeah, OAuth and OStatus are two separate things, and therefore unrelated.

@blog That's really bad idea and a even worse time to do so.There ist already a fork of GNUsocial which tries to add ActivityPub support. It would have been much better if Gargron has waited until most GNUsocial instances have updated to that. Many people have GNUsocial contacts, maybe even without knowing that they're on GNUsocial because it's perfectly compatible, and they won't be able to interact anymore soon.I really hope that GlitchSoc won't merge that...

@Gargron @blog I understand that there has been a long time of waiting.I always kept a look on GNUsocial and it really looked dead more or less. But now we have https://notabug.org/diogo/gnu-social/src/experimental where work on ActivityPub support is actively getting done and I think it's only a matter of time until that becomes stable.
