Back to work after 4 days off with a short interlude last night. I'm finding it hard to get back in the grind. We had my youngest daughter's 18th birthday yesterday. Today is my youngest son's 15th.There's an empty nest at the end of the tunnel.I wish there was an employment change on the horizon but I'm finding it's very out of style to hire an old white dude. Even if he's easily the most qualified candidate.

@DistroJunkie Say, with a straight face, that you're african. If questioned, you have a egyptian parent. Usually segfaults hiring managers.

@r000t @DistroJunkie It’s not my job title but I work at management level in a smallish company so I have to do recruitment as part of the job.

@jamie @DistroJunkie Ah, I was involved in the justice system as a child. Because my family didn't have money, I wound up with a felony conviction. So I'd put out applications, get excited callbacks every day, and over time I discovered that I could *reliably* make them wince, suck air through clenched teeth. (a "chupse")I mention my felony conviction, I hear the air brakes, and I'm told some lie like "I have to talk to the person who handles that I'll call you back"

@jamie @DistroJunkieOne guy did it TWICE, SAME GUY, for the SAME POSITION over a 3 month period. "Oh man, I'll have to ask someone, I'll call you right back I promise", both times. Air brakes and everything.

@r000t I know we're a bit off the original topic here - in the UK offences generally don't have to be disclosed after a period of time (though they might still show up on a record check) - does it work like that in US?@DistroJunkie

@jamie @DistroJunkie It's basically the inverse. Employers are/aren't allowed to search farther back than x. Individual states pass "ban the box" laws, which make those questions on applications illegal, because they're used as filters. Blanket bans on felons is ILLEGAL under equal opportunity employment laws, but that of course requires proof. That's why I record the calls.

@jamie @DistroJunkie Personally, I've noticed that my conviction doesn't appear on any background checks, ever. I suspect it's out of an abundance of caution from the background check companies. It's an adult conviction, but the date suggests it could be a juvenile offense. Not returning it guarantees they aren't violating the privacy of juvenile records.Because if they did, I wouldn't have to work ever again ;)

@jamie @DistroJunkie Anyway, I've basically accepted that I'm damaged goods, wholly unwanted regardless of any skills I may have. Person doing the callback usually jerks me off over "oh wow you have so much skill for your age and all these personal projects" and all I gotta do is say "I'm a felon" to hear the brakes. My record is 45 seconds.

@jamie @DistroJunkie I figured1) honesty is the best policy? 2) the crush of rejection is much worse after you've had 4 phone screens, 3 phone interviews, 2 in person interviews, and a partridge in a pear tree. Train tickets cost money.

@r000t@jamieI don't know your circumstances or the rules in your state. It might be well worth the time and money to explore getting the felony conviction expunged from your record if possible.

@DistroJunkieYeahhhhhParent was "victim", knew full well it'd be an everlasting job stopper. Didn't want charges pressed, said "can't afford attorney" as an excuse and they said "now don't you worry, we'll charge him as an adult so he gets a public defender" Also, sorry to turn your toot into a huge thread and manifesto about our nation's hiring practices. @jamie

@r000t@jamieFrom my perspective, no apologies are necessary. This is what Mastodon is for.I don't know what you do but one option is contract work. They rarely dig into your personal background when you're a contractor.Full disclosure: I hate doing contract work but there are times when it's appropriate.
