As a child I used to play a game of walking on pavements by only stepping on whole slabs, avoiding the joins and any cracks. As an adult I still find myself doing silly things. For example, I'll find myself watching a digital clock for a particular number pattern to appear, like 09:10:11 (10 minutes and 11 seconds past 9am). I'll give myself bonus points for more difficult sequences e.g. only prime numbers. 😃 #SillyThings #games

@fitheach I'm reading a really good book at the moment called 'The Art of Noticing' and it talks about doing things exactly like this in order to develop a better understanding of our environment.

@fitheach If I step on a join with my right foot I then have to step on the next with the left foot to even it up but that means that the right foot was first in the sequence. To even that up I'll do the next sequence starting with the left.It then gets more complicated when I repeat the above sequence of sequences but in reverse and so on. This leads to a sequence of infinite length. It doesn't have to involve stepping on joins it can be almost anything that can be left or right.

@wizardofosmium Wow! Those are complicated rules. It would need some concentration to follow the rules and not bump into people at the same time. 😃

@fitheach I don't do it for fun, it's just something I almost feel like I have to do. I can stop if I'm distracted but I can just about see the line where it becomes OCD.

@jamie My wife keeps telling me that me noticing all the invisible lines extending from building edges, lamp posts, and slabs, and not stepping on the lines and their invisible extensions is the beginning of an unhealthy obsession… @fitheach

@kensanata I have to disagree with your wife, at least about the noticing part. Noticing these things is essential for visual artists, photographers, architects etc. Pattern recognition is also important to programmers in a slightly different sense.@jamie

@fitheach @kensanata @jamie This thread reminds me of my visit to Australia where we gazed up at the stars (zero light pollution) and the guide told us;'The Aboriginal people don't look at the stars, they look at the gaps inbetween'.

@fitheach That’s what I’m often trying to argue. But then she sees me sitting in a car or train, “jumping” over the lines of lamp posts, reflectors or power line masts with my jaw, like in “biting the air” because I can’t jump, and she elbows me: stop doing this! In these moments it doesn’t help when I say perhaps I could have been a great architect. Well, now you’re just biting the air, and that doesn’t make a great architect… 😆🚏😁😆🚏😁😆🚏😁@jamie

@kensanata If I am in a furniture shop with my wife I will open and close all of the drawers and look inside every wardrobe. It's a genuine compulsion. It drives her mad and she tells me I'll have to pay for it if I break it. I think it's because when I was young I was always told not to touch - now I can do what I please, so I do.@fitheach
