Among libertarians, the biggest complaint about “illegal immigration” is (ostensibly) because they consume resources but “don’t contribute” [taxes].But tax protesters consume the same resources & don’t pay taxes either, & are hailed as heroes by the same. What’s the difference?

@gnuissance no no, I think you’re confused. Yes, Milton Friedman was a statist, that’s correct. He had good libertarian ideas and instincts, then was a hypocrite when it came to the real world, unfortunately. He wasn’t a libertarian in practice, he was just a minarchist.Friedman is far from the libertarian gold standard.

@gnuissance simply from the philosophy of maximum individual liberty. Any extent to which the state exists, individual liberty is proportionally diminished. The only condition in which maximum individual liberty can exist is without the state. So, the extent to which one advocates the state is the extent to which one is not a libertarian.

The understanding of the L-word that describes "basically-Republicans" who are anti-intervention and pro-weed is useful and accurate by virtue of the fact that so many use it that way. @blaha libertarian is equally accurate to anarchist, because they are equivalent terms. “Basically Republicans” who support some set of libertarian ideals are not libertarians any more than “basically white people” wearing a headdress are indians. Even if they call themselves such, even if you call them such, or even if everyone does so. They might be “more libertarian“ than someone else, but they’re not pure libertarians, which means they’re not actually libertarians. Sorry.

@Liberty4Masses I believe you are stating the correct definition of libertarianism as promoted by Murray Rothbard. I don't answer to it anymore because of all the hijacking. If I'm forced to define myself I simply say: "I advocate for the expansion of freedom to the utmost possible to every individual on the planet."
