ThreadFor @barrsniffsatjejuneanalysis You asked why I'm interested in Bulgarian.MANY reasons! In World War One, the Bulgarians were virtually undefeated. They refused to be taken prisoner, so they would throw rocks after running out of ammunition. They had no age limit for the army.

The Allies reported that Bulgarians were almost twice as strong as British, French, and Greek soldiers. So militarily they fascinate me, but also musically.Chalga is Bulgarians folk music melded with techno. This is a racy video, so be warned.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ6Tr8dH4ZE

There's also the genre of "wedding music," which is impossible for outsiders to play. The time signature, key, and tempo change without warning.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cXS5QrPkDs&t=1m39s

One of my bass heroes is Radi Kazakov, who spent a lot of time in prison during the communist era.Listen to the bass run after the clarinet.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMUWuyeKQuE

Here's Kazakov in Turkey five years ago, improvising with a Turkish folk-jazz band.Sound checks are always better than the show itself.Kazakov is seated on the right.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXZbsLjeHqw

@ThomasWic I had to wait a bit to catch it, after the clarinet and accordion, but then got IT. Sublime. Love witnessing people at their best. Best.

@ThomasWic That is fascinating. Tumultuous and complex. Not sure I would do that as wedding music, but respect the style.

@ThomasWic I'm not hugely familiar with Bulgaria. But I LOVED the 'Bulgarian Female Vocal Choir' compilations from 4AD in the 80s. https://thevinylfactory.com/features/mystere-des-voix-bulgares-4ad-story/

@ThomasWic And... that is a phenomenal pic of faces, hands, body posture. Some tough guys, who still had determination and grit in them. The guy to the right grabs my focus. Sense calm knowing and confidence and experience -- fascinating. God, I so admire capable human beings.

@ThomasWic I was gonna say that he's locked in with the drummer tighter than Dick's hatband, but he's clearly leading the drummer into the dynamics of the song. Unreal.

@ThomasWic A friend of ours comes from Bulgaria. This was when it had gone back being a capitalist country. And the first thing he did was stock up on bread. But truly one of the nicest, hardworking individuals you’ll ever meet. I imagine that most Bulgarians are like him.

@ThomasWic I visited Bulgaria in 1994 and met my wife of nearly 25 years. Spent the first 2 weeks of June in Sofia and the Black Sea just now. My in-laws are deeply connected to Bulgaria national culture and I'd be happy to support any curiosity. Az sum balkan ghia!

@ThomasWic Don't know if you are familiar with the Don Ellis Big Band from the 70's. Famous for playing big band jazz in strange meters. He had a Bulgarian piano player named Milcho Leviev who was a prolific composer / arranger. Check out Bulgarian Bulge on YouTube. Also, The Magic Bus Ate My Doughnut, and Pussy Wiggle Stomp. I would embed a link if I just knew how!
