The only thing that has changed is that a new generation of web developers have grown up and started to systematically dismantle everything we did a generation ago to stop these bastards when they nearly killed the open web the first time. We had to sacrifice free/open/unmoderated public spaces because this is how they got in our faces to do their dirty deeds. Spammers, scammers, hate groups, malware providers, and a whole host of other self-interested parties drawn by the promise of infinite/global reach for their message; whatever it might be. We can't go back - the age of innocence is long gone. Ironically the best anti-abuse tool we had was "buddylists" which later evolved into "social networks" and more recently de-evolved back to where we started. It's more convenient to pretend that everybody can get along in public. We can't.

@macgirvin The solutions that we found generally came under whitelisting (where possible), filtering (where necessary) and quarantining (for safety's sake). This generation is learning the same thing all over again - but apparently more for reasons of bubble creation than technical necessity. I guess having gigs of RAM and massive computing power and megabaud at your fingertips gives you some luxuries. Of course, the spammers have those too.

@jankoekepan @macgirvin I've been thinking about this problem and have some other solutions to suggest. http://meta.ath0.com/2019/01/how-to-fix-it/

@mathew @macgirvin There are significant problems with some of these, in that they foreclose possible participation rather arbitrarily. Why should your opinion of my postings preclude my ability to discuss your postings, including with people outside your circle? Expiry dates are also more of an illusion than a practical item. Consider all the deleted tweets that live forever in infamy.

@jankoekepan @macgirvin Sure there are problems. There are problems with what we have now. But I think we need to try more ideas rather than give up.I don't understand what you mean by "my ability to discuss your postings" being impacted. Nothing would prevent you from quoting and discussing anything you could see, just like today.Deleted tweets live in infamy largely because they are world readable when posted. Try getting hold of an archive of old tweets from a locked account.

@mathew @macgirvin The question is whether to empower people to put their own eyes out, or muzzle others. You proposed people deleting the posts of others. That's muzzling. We already have muting/blocking, which is less intrusive. As for locked accounts: people's private tweets have been leaked, and will doubtless be again.

@jankoekepan @macgirvin Sorry, but you don't have the right to barge in to my conversation in my virtual living room and start ranting. If you try it, I have every right to get you to shut up and leave.Sure, some private tweets have been leaked, but it's far less frequent than public tweets being harvested for material.

@mathew @macgirvin a) nothing on the fediverse timeline can practically be regarded as remotely private. It's as private as IRC, which is to say public as Times Square.b) Again, why doesn't blocking/muting work? What's insufficient about it? Why? You haven't explained this yet.

@jankoekepan @macgirvin a) I'm not talking about the fediverse. I'm talking about social media in general. Like Mike McGirvin I'm inclined to think that the Fediverse is structurally flawed.b) Blocking/muting doesn't work because everyone else still sees the garbage. See: e-mail spam.

@macgirvin what are you even trying to argue, that Facebook was the best solution to this problem? 🤔

@jonah Not at all. Facebook became a spammer, scammer, *and* malware provider.

@mathew> That may not seem like a very long list, but I’ve yet to find any system that can check all the boxes. You might take a look at Zap. Expiry and feed order are built-in (core) apps that can be enabled if you want them. Everything else on your list is default behaviour.
