@selea My opinion? No. Free Speech is about protecting unfavorable speech, not the stuff we all agree upon.I say de-audience them instead (e.g., don't show up to listen). When a crowd turns up to protest e.g. a white supremacist demonstration, the extremists think they are "getting attention" and "firing people up." It's GOOD to them that protestors are there. Nobody wants to give a speech to an empty room, or feels like they made a difference if not one person cared enough to even show up.

@selea Further, if you deplatform those people how do you think they feel about that? Do they say "Gee, people really don't like us. We suck. Maybe we should reconsider our position on this matter?"No, they wear that shit like a badge of honor. "They are so afraid of our message that they had us banned! We're becoming influential and dangerous to the establishment!" And so it fuels the fire.Same dynamic as killing a leader and making a martyr. You produce the opposite of the intended result.

@sean @selea censoring the extereme is a trap. if you censor them people will be drawn to their message as they wonder why they shouldn't look at what they are saying. it also enables them to control the narrative and creates a legitimization on a victim narrative. i.e."see the jews don't want you to know the truth that they run the institutions, the censorship is proof"

@static @selea @jeff If that's a serious question then you should ask yourself: what are you really trying to accomplish?

@static @selea @jeff A question was asked ("should we deplatform extremists?"), and I offered my opinion. No, we should not. What am I trying to accomplish? I guess, firstly for people to be free and then hopefully to be decent to one another? But from the wide view, it's my belief that you don't end hatred by hating. You don't end violence by committing it. And you don't preserve liberty by preventing people from voicing their opinions - no matter how wrong you believe those opinions to be.

@static @selea @jeff It's a cute infographic but we'll just have to agree to disagree on this point.

@sean @jeff @selea Afraid to engage me in the marketplace of ideas? Read the primary text by the liberal philosopher superman Karl Popper and then let's keep going from there, since I guess you can only respect ideas that come from academic texts (rather than "cute infographics") -- I'm assuming you never read his "Open Society and its Enemies" despite your apparent liberal ideology. let me repost the relevant snippet from his famous and well-respected book -- and keep in mind he's a liberal, one of your guys (I am a leftist) Don't discriminate based on appearances but on content. This is another liberal axiom which you're seeming to disregard while trying to make the case for a liberal perspective on speech and dialog.image.png

@static @selea @jeff But I have engaged with you. I expressed my opinion, you expressed your own. You seem to have an opinion that differs from my own, and I don't feel a need to change your mind. Like I said, we can agree to disagree. In your world, does there have to be a winner in every discussion? Does it have to be you?Regarding Popper, he can have his opinion and I can have mine. And so can you.And I don't believe in the existence of supermen outside of comic books.

I understand both side in the debate, and personally I am kinda torn when it comes to this. Both options has it's obvious downsides with (possibly) bad consequences.I dont think that it is a really good answer to this.@sean @static @jeff
