So depending upon how long it takes I may delay the next Freedombone release a little. It's becoming clear to me that the current blocklist model for fediverse servers is inadequate and that it's impractical to try to keep up with an ever growing list of sites controlled by adversaries.So I think I'll retire gnusocial and postActiv until such time as I can operate them from an allowlist of domains, and switch Pleroma over to using that. I can pre-populate the list with a few popular instances and then the userop can add their own as needed.This would make it far less likely for new people getting into the fediverse via self-hosting to have to deal with an off-putting assortment of disturbing/illegal content. If the initial user experience is bad people are less likely to want to be in the fediverse.

@bob As the type of person who turns off all sensitive content features and wants the option to talk to (or eavesdrop on) everyone, I would just ask that you please document the shit out of that, so users like me definitely won't miss the necessary config changes to switch to blacklist mode. Also I'd suggest still maintaining a ready-made blacklist of the worst offenders with a little blurb for each.

@deutrino I'm planning on retaining the existing blocklist functionality and could maybe have that switchable. Much of the blocklist will still be needed for XMPP, email, Matrix, etc.

@bob I'm not quite sure that a large whitelist as compared with a relatively small blacklist is easier to maintain.Also, a default tiny white list actually goes against the whole idea of the fediverse as it strictly limits federation.These latest problems pose a real conundrum! :-(

@gemlog They do, but I think whitelisting is the only way. ActivityPub simply isn't up to the job of being able to keep multiplying adversaries away. This is something which Mike McGirvin has complained about in the past, but few people paid attention because back then the fediverse was still composed of not many servers.I always assumed that whitelists would be a desperate last resort, for the reasons you've given, but that time has finally arrived.

@bob @gemlog To be fair, what I said was that blacklisting doesn't scale. When I refer to whitelisting it also has nothing to do with domains, as our relationships are typically with people and not with servers. The reason why most fediverse implementations have to resort to domain blocking is because of the promiscuous comment permissions. This is the real problem - and it will eventually kill the network; unless changed. You don't actually need to let anybody in the world dogpile onto any of your public posts. Yes, a network needs discovery to grow, but this can be accomplished with groups and other FOAF techniques rather than opening spam and harassment gateways that you can drive an armada of starships through. You can moderate or leave a group and FOAF is the best discovery mechanism there is by far - which is why FB focused on that. Nothing you can do about promiscuous comments except block, block, block, and block some more. Eventually most people will tire of blocking and like email they'll just give up and resign themselves to live with the spam and abuse or they will leave the service to regain their dignity. You can centralise the blocking when you run into the scalability limits, but then you've got a centralised network and all the associated problems.
