@flussence @kaniini I'm just laughing at the absolute stupidity of wasting RAM and CPU forcing federation with instances like "toot.wales" which is exactly what it sounds like, which means it's going to be incredibly difficult to find someone who is interested in that instance, even harder someone who will start interacting with its user as a point of entry in the Fediverse itself.

@flussence @kaniini but at the same time: it says so much about the developer and which instances he desires to interact with that I wonder if he knows even a massive dumb dumb could connect the fact that he's from the UK, he forces sync with .wales instance, he probably forces sync with instances related to his interests, he also forces sync with switter.

@kemonine even the instance picker would miss all the non-mastodon nodes out there.Anyways the list seems very random and suggests it is merely based on the author's own follow list.Like... it federated with switter.at but misses some pretty influential, safe and mainstream sites. I mean...sure switter is valid and an important community but by some standards (workplace) it isn't completely "safe" LOLThis sort of strategy is unhealthy to federation / decentralization.@dansup @kaniini

@kemonine If whitelisting is what the packager thinks is the best default policy I am fine with that, but I would prefer it had an EMPTY list by default, not one that is hard coded with the package manager's personal favourites as a starting point.That's a terrible precedent to set. It encourages centralization (new users will instinctively pick whitelisted hosts etc) which is bad enough. The fact the list is arbitrary is doubly bad.@dansup @kaniini

@kemonine There are use cases for a small (even <100 users) self hosted AP instance with a whitelisted policy but yeah, it is definitely not the typical intention behind self hosted nodes. Most want to federate widely.I certainly didn't set up my own server just so I could shout into the void.@dansup @kaniini

@msh Exactly.I've been thinking about private communities for awhile and the white list feature as well as some of Kaniini's graylist stuff would be perfect for a lot of those.For a family unit / some friends who wan to get on the network?
