Mark Field MPMansion House dinner. As far as I am aware Mr Field was not under attack, nor was anyone else. In which case it wasn't self-defence.Video evidence suggests that he assaulted the Greenpeace protester, that is completely unacceptable. I should hope the Metropolitan Police will press charges and the CPS should pursue a case against him.#Greenpeace #MansionHouse

@fitheach Seconded. I do wonder what a psychoanalyst would make of all that grabbing women by the neck though.

@fitheach He was preventing an act of 'aggravated trespass'. On the contrary, she should be arrested and charged with that.

@andyc Really? That sounds like the kind of excuse Field would come out with to justify his attack. I'm seeing reports that the women had invites to the event and weren't trespassing. Regardless his actions were completely disproportionate and were an immediate reaction. Where was his request for the protestors to desist or leave?BTW can you have "aggravated trespass" in a building?https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/trespass-and-nuisance-land

@bob Last night's protest was entirely non-violent. The response by Field certainly was violent. It would set a dark precedent if field wasn't prosecuted for his actions. It didn't appear as if Field tried to "reason" with her, he very quickly moved to push her out by the neck.

So, Chris Davies (Con) is removed as an MP, triggering a by-election. This was the result of a sufficient number of his constituents signing a recall petition in response to him faking expenses. This reduces the Tory+DUP majority by one. Potentially a winnable seat for the LibDems if national polling were applied in Brecon and Radnorshire. Here's hoping Mr Field could also face a recall petition.

@fitheach @andyc @StuC @GreenandBlack @gemlog It is quite unusual. If you were trying to remove someone from some event why would you go straight for the neck? Perhaps he has a history of doing this.

@gemlog @bob @andyc @StuC @GreenandBlack I saw a Tweet from the Met' saying they have received several complaints. I should hope something will now happen.I've also seen several barristers opine that it was an assault, and a former chief prosecutor (Nazir Afzal) at the CPS also called it an assault.

@fitheach @bob @andyc @StuC @GreenandBlack It is obviously an unprovoked simple assault and the video is everywhere to prove it beyond doubt. Do you think any of that applauding throng would like to perjure themselves? I don't think so.I just did a little round-up of canadian mp's who've been charged with assault. I hope it's not a singularly canadian tradition.

@fitheach @bob @andyc @StuC @GreenandBlack I thought it would be easy, since I could think of a few off the top of my head, but, sadly, the word 'assault' does not appear in this list:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_scandals_in_CanadaThe UK's is longer (naturally):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_scandals_in_the_United_KingdomI forgot the senate:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Brazeauassault with ketchup? https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/mp-julian-fantino-charged-over-alleged-ketchup-assault-during-1973-police-raid new to me that one.Nunziata https://www.mediatrainingtoronto.com/blog/2008/10/25/john-nunziata-puts-his-foot-in-it.htmlRunning out of (ascii) characters...

@fitheach @gemlog @bob @andyc @StuC @GreenandBlack There are stories from American history of senators having full on brawls on the floor of the Senate. These were in the years before the Civil War.
