Its a universal standard with a billion extensions for servers (called XEPs) that has been around foreverIn practice people use it to send 1on1 encrypted chat to each other, but you can make chatrooms similar to irc and all kinds of other things if your home server has the right XEPs Matrix is more or a slack/discord compeditors and is too inflexible to be anything else, while you could make xmpp do all of that if you wanted @sjw

They didn't disclose that they were forks or what the source code even is until people on here complained enoughThey really didn't change much besides name and branding on their forks either
