The argument that boo-hoo school system sucks because they don't teach us how to do taxes and take out loans that we actually need to do are dumb because those things change on a constant basis and the point of the education system would be to give you tools to use in a way that you can adapt in situations that change. The fucking reason why taxes and loans and shit like financing is tough is because it changes from region by region, by law and across time. The shit you would've learned in school would have been invalid by the time you can apply it.

@tibikeThey should offer resources at least. Where to go for this information. There is general information about how they work that would be helpful.

@tibike on the other hand, it'd be nice if people learned the basics of how economy worksapparently a lot of people try to figure it out themselves and get it horribly wrong in the process

@ivesen dunno, we had that type of class of how firms are structured and what is the role of each and the broad strokes of micro and macro economy. It mostly depends on the professors if they can relay that information too, but if you wanted more detail you'd have to go and do a major in economy.I thought most people have at least this type of class?

@tibike that's not a valid argument as a whole. Every school has ppl who have experience with business and tax matters, you could at least offer voluntary seminars on these topics. Each school for their region and local circumstances. BUT I doubt that there would be high interest in these seminars anyway, especially by the ppl who complain about these things.

@tibike if there's any "education" to be had, it would be how to manage a household budget so you never have to take a loan except in very specific situations imo.

@deathy guess what, we had economy classes in grade 11 but everyone was like this is trash and why do we have this trash course anyway, it's just a filler course. And I've seen them complain now that why isn't this thought out better in the real world bla bla bla.I'm just mad at these arguments now...

@awg and most budgeting is based on how to avoid the psychological tricks companies try to bait you with consuming everything that you can. Basically taming the monkey in you.

@tibike yeeea, the ppl complainin about it are trash. If you apply for big business in Germany for instance, you have to go through assessment centers, which basically call upon skills that you have learned in school (group work, holding presentations, prepare sheets, etc.), and that's also what you do in uni. So yeah.. I mean we could just leave out history classes, riiiiight, what could possibly go wroooong?!

@tibike @awg this needs to be emphasised a lot moreI've lost count of all the people that fall right for the propag- ahem, advertisements to buy stuff/services they wouldn't want or need in the first place... and then complain about how they can't make ends meet

@awg @tibike "I wish they taught how to balance a check book in school like the lifecycle of a beetle is interesting but i mean learning how to take care of yourself, how to make healthy meals."

@EmergencyAjr @tibike tbh I think most people only deign to think about practical things, and i think the intent to give them a proper liberal arts education has proven to be far more detrimental and expensive to society as a whole than anyone anticipated. let's slash the curriculum and stick with the "three Rs"--in an age of Unlimited Internet, wtf not? bring back apprenticeships and trade schools, make uni attendance the exception rather than the rule, and focus on making each person viable and independent before they reach 18 yo. the minority of the population who will want to learn about beetles will anyway.

@awg @EmergencyAjr @tibike As long as they teach some basic aspects of a variety of fields I think that would be fine, but if you aren't exposed to some things it might take you years to find out you're interested in it and that can potentially be something that can change your entire path in life

@awg@EmergencyAjr @tibikeThey are just starting to push trades again. I've worked at a few schools now that have trade related courses. There are a lot more agriculture based programs out there now than even 5 years ago. The trades are dying and that's not a good thing.
