The always interesting Steve Sailer on an important Obama-era shift in Democratic Party politics. "What accounts for The Great Awokening that began in roughly 2013? Why did vast numbers of white Democrats suddenly subscribe to theories that only Grievance Studies majors took seriously before?"https://www.takimag.com/article/the-great-awokening-conspiracy-theory/

Words like “patriarchy,” “mansplaining,” “toxic masculinity,” “whiteness,” “non-binary,” and “Islamophobia” exploded in popularity. I think it can be explained as a social/tactical shift caused by the internal logic of leftism, but maybe other factors are involved. Some rich people did benefit....

A related take on the culture war and the powers of social media."The Left has won the culture wars. Now they’re just driving around shooting survivors"“The most powerful people in the world today are the people who are writing the algorithms for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram because they’re controlling the spread of information. @ThomasWic Many reasons. He ran a smart campaign. He opposed illegal immigration. Lots of people wanted a change from the Obama years. Hillary was a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign. Democrats were split over Bernie. Some were "high on their own supply" and took Trump's defeat for granted. But I think relentless anti-Trump bias by the MSM and Silicon Valley social media took a toll. Not enough to beat him, but it probably cost him a few states. And their bias is ramping up for 2020.

@knotreally @ThomasWic Some good points to ponder but there IS this..74,000 requests for a 20,000 seat arena.(as of 3 days ago) And thats just one rally-Fla. His popularity is still strong..And I may be over positive but a lot of things between now and the election could happen like reports being declassified showing what REALLY happened and other things like maybe a trade deal with China, the economy,etc..He even has Mexico cooperating with him now..Id say its too early to tell yet.

There are billions of people in the world and I say maybe a third of them are regulars online. I'd say less than that engage on social media. And even less probably know of the politically correct assholes. And those assholes aren't that large of a group, they just scream loud.

@JeanK I don't underestimate patriots, but I think you underestimate the power of the people controlling social media. Most voters don't follow politics they way we do. They see what's in their social media feeds. It's proven that votes can be shifted by manipulating those feeds.

@JeanK In a democracy, the masses of undecided voters and people who don't care much about politics are crucial. Parties try to rally them with persuasion and GOTV efforts. Social media has unprecedented power to influence them, and social media (and the world's biggest search engine) is controlled by the left. That's a BFD.https://www.pnas.org/content/112/33/E4512

@knotreally @JeanK But are those masses on social media? Are they even interested in searching about politics? Undecided voters I would think are most likely NOT political. These people most likely would be better reached by conventional methods: Ground game, political ads on TV, etc. It's smart to use social media to one’s advantage, but one shouldn't rely on the idea that it’s the be all to end all.

@umad80 @JeanK I never meant to imply that social media was everything, just that it's a Very Big Thing. Ground game and TV ads are fine, but are old school. Today leftists at Facebook, Twitter, and Google are deciding what *billions* of people see, every single day.

@umad80 @knotreally @JeanK The GOAL is to make leftists think that social media has allowed them to "win the culture war."It's clear that Trump is working to give them that idea.Research Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. She fooled all the "experts"--to the tune of $9 billion. Not a single person outside her Silicon Valley startup questioned her ridiculous claims, and when she was exposed as a fraud, nobody believed it.Trump is ruthlessly using that credulity to his advantage.

@ThomasWic @knotreally @JeanK Yes! And it's a brilliant strategy.Think about: If the left is winning the culture war, why is the number of the pro-life, especially with young people, rising? Why is Gen Z considered the most conservative since the WW2 generation? And I bet once we get rid of the Shapiro wing of the Republican party, more folks will identify themselves as on the right.

@ThomasWic @knotreally The way they describe it, they say that Trump ran before they perfected the algorithms. They say that Trump used the algorithms against them, but now they've had 2 years to hone the algorithms against Trump supporters. It wasn't that many years ago all of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook did not reorder or rampantly censor posts (that we know of); that all started a handful of years ago. Now they can to a large degree control almost everyone that uses affected apps.

@ThomasWic @umad80 @knotreally @JeanK Why does the constitution say Congress should establish the post office and postal routes? Because the sovereignty of the people depends upon the lines of communication. What is the 'culture war' to social media? It's not about winning or losing, it's only a means to usurp that power, breaking the nation down to the atomic level, essential relationships between persons, then interjecting conflicts to restructure them.Trump doesn't control that.

@ThomasWic @umad80 @JeanK "It's clear that Trump is working to give them that idea." [That social media allowed the Left to win the culture war.]In many ways the Left *did* win. We have same sex marriage that we didn't vote for. Every major corporation now celebrates Pride month. Drag queen story time for kids is a thing. But Trump can use that momentum against them, in a judo/Aikido way, by (e.g.) trolling them into "going too far."

@ThomasWic @umad80 @JeanK Many people haven't made up their minds! That's true every election. As polarizing as Trump is, there are still many people who don't know what to think. They have mixed feelings, or they only tune into politics at election time. Political parties always have to work to persuade those people. Thus it's crucial to understand the "hidden persuasion" power of big tech, and how they use it.

I'm agreeing that the mass media is often an "enemy of truth"!Like I said in another thread, Trump did overcome social media and MSM bias in 2016, but it cost him votes, and it costs him support today. In order to combat that bias, we have to recognize it and know how it works. It would be foolish to dismiss real evidence that Big Tech can and does sway votes.
