Yeah, so I tried reading a very boring book that I need to study. I'm not sure if my ADHD meds are tuned as optimally as they could be.Did not take me long to feel an intense urge to leave my seat. I need to use this awful thing to test with from now on. It's a god damn near perfect concentration test, because I hate reading it so much.@jack

I'm not sure how much the meds are supposed to help. I mean, do normal people sit there suppressing an urge to leave for hours? I had perhaps expected it to be less bothersome? I think if I gritted my teeth, I could just sit there and suffer through this boring book. Maybe that's just life for you? Perhaps you can't get rid of the pain of doing dull things but you can endure that pain for longer. The whole "blood, sweat and tears" thing.@jack

@thj yeah. There is no magic pill. At best, good meds cancel out the worst issues of illness. None are perfect. From the sound of it, I think it might be worth testing something that you desire to read, but have thus far been unable to.

@jack The awful book in question is the theory for the driving test. I want to take a drivers license.

@thj wow. I remember thinking of that as a chore, but not a truly bad one. Lol

@jack It's terrible. It's so pedagogical and factual. Doesn't exactly tell an interesting story. It's just a bunch of rules you need to understand and they're not cool and interesting rules like with code. Just "do this because we tell you to, for safety reasons".

@jack In math class it was the same. They told you a bunch of steps to perform calculations, but it felt pointless. I mean, for me, getting a good grade was a thing in the far future, so it failed to be a motivator. That short term thinking. I guess one thing I've never really learned to pull off is to let such long term goals motivate me in the now. Maybe there is a mental technique people use for this that I never had the chance to use.

@jack Do you know if there's a way of thinking for that kind of thing? "Remember why you're doing this" never worked for me before. I don't know how to make my brain do that yet... How do you learn that?

@thj in your job, you do a lot of abstract thinking, right? These things are often dry due mostly to the lack of examples. But, the better you are with Algebra, the more the Abstract region grows( as a teen ). This was how I talked myself into it.

@jack I suppose it's abstract. I mean, to me, a computer program feels like a machine I'm building.

@jack Hmm, shit, I'm beginning to suspect that the 20 mg Ritalin LA keeps me just below the ideal level. Not sure yet, but I just added some extra fast acting Ritalin on top of it and I think I'm calming down? I'll give it a bit more time to see if I'm right...

@thj in my experience it’s too small a dose for a Long Acting formulation. Concerta is the most prescribed extended release Ritalin here. They make up to 72mg

@jack Methylphenidate is fucking weird. It makes you slightly manic before it calms you down. It's so incredibly misleading.

@thj it really is. This is why I much prefer the Adderall I’ve now taken for years.

@jack Adderall might be more difficult to get prescribed here in Norway.

@jack Yeah, it looks like it's available but paperwork is needed. Too close to a street drug I suppose.

@thj actually I’ve always found it to have no hold on my brain. Producing no craving or abuse potential. It doesn’t really do the euphoria that Ritalin can cause. It just kinda does what it’s supposed to. I haven’t needed a dosage increase in years.

@jack Right but the chemical composition is what I mean, since that's what the law cares about.

@thj if the law is based on the chemical composition, it’s due to lawmakers not understanding the nature of the Amphetamine class of chemicals. There is a great deal of misunderstandings among the barely educated who know nothing about health and fight staunchly for regulating medication.
