Interesting interview with Jaron Lanier (2018): https://www.vox.com/2018/7/27/17618756/jaron-lanier-deleting-social-media-book-kara-swisher-too-embarrassed-podcastQuestion: “How [do you] respond to the argument that without viable alternatives, walking away from Facebook or social media more generally is a privilege?”JL: "If you’re privileged enough to have the option of walking away from social media, and yet you don’t, you’re failing to use your privilege to defeat a system that traps other people who are less fortunate than you."

This was basically the calculus I made when I quit Twitter. I don't need a social media account for my livelihood. I was going to keep my job either way. I was happy to fall on that sword. The biggest disappointment to me, nearly 2 years after deleting my Twitter account with 8k followers, is that none of my friends or colleagues took the plunge with me. All the people I admire from the JavaScript/web community, including those building alternatives to Twitter, are still on Twitter.

At some point I have to wonder if I'm just too hard-headed and doctrinaire. Everybody else decided to make their peace with Twitter, and yet here I still am, shouting into a void and wondering if anybody's listening.

Don't get me wrong – I love the Mastodon community. Hanging out with "tech vegans" (as I call them: https://nolanlawson.com/2019/05/31/tech-veganism/) has been a really interesting experience. It's motivated me to switch up my habits, and to start using LineageOS and Ubuntu. But it's not really my tribe. My tribe is web developers with Mac laptops building Node.js sites. That tribe is still all on Twitter, and I miss them.

@nolanI feel that. At the end of the day, I think it's most important to make the fediverse the best and most inviting place it can be while continuing to let people know we exist. We don't have to BEAT the established social media, we just have to not JOIN them.

@nolan some of us Mac-wielding JS devs are on here too. Tho, I didn’t delete my Twitter. Like going veg, I don’t do cold turkey, I do transition where I spend majority of my procrastination here rather than twitter.

@ilovecomputers @nolan Mac + JS + UX here too. I didn’t leave Twitter, but I did create an absolutely massive Tweetbot mute filter list… I do agree with you though, and I believe others are here somewhere. People with specific interests are just hard to find, I think.

@nolanYou are not shouting into a void. But there's something to be said for keeping your accounr and using it to evalgelize the Fediverse. Maybe repost there the way people repost here. With links so people see that it's coming from someplace else. That's how @yoz got me to come here from Facebook (and then disappeared unfortunately, I think).

@yoz @nolanI also talk about the Fediverse to my friends and coworkers in person when the topic of social media comes up, since any social media talk is usually complaints about the silos.

@nolan I know what it's like to be on a social media platform that doesn't match your "tribe".It was weird leaving academia, since Twitter was much more formative (and fun) when I was livetweeting conferences and papers I was reading. When I left, I had nothing left to do on Twitter so I felt like I was in the wrong place for a long time.I don't really thing I have a "tribe" here either, but I see it more as a self-hosted microblog than anything else.

At this point, though, I'm in too deep. I'm not going to come crawling back to Twitter. (Some rando grabbed my name anyway – who knew Twitter even let you do that? 🙃) So I'm going to stick with Jaron Lanier's advice and stay off of Twitter. My pride and stubbornness probably wouldn't let me go back anyway.

@nolan I think that’s the boat a lot of people find themselves in. #MeWe is a pretty cool social media site that prides itself in zero ads and zero tracking. I left FB and use MeWe but none of my friends and family are on it. I live far from my family and I used FB to share photos of my kids with my family. They are not making the plunge with me either.

@nolan I think you reach more people in the fediverse than you realise.I deleted my Twitter the day I set up my coales.co instance a bit over 2 years ago. My first post as the first user on my instance with no followers was truly shouting into the void! But I have observed that relative to the size of the user base the fediverse is much more meaningfully engaging. I must admit it was easy for me to quit Twitter because I was never able to grok it...

@nolan ...from the moment I signed up for Twitter (probably later than most here, maybe 2013?) I found it a void of a different kind: a cacophony of follow trending tweets, follow suggests and ads. I felt like since I wasn't a homestead or celebrity that I'd have to shut until I was hoarse in order to get noticed at all.And when I was finally noticed I was the target of insults. I couldn't comprehend why people *wanted* to be there. On new year's day 2018 I closed my Facebook account too...

@nolan ...that was more noticeable as I'd been on FB for 11 years and remember when it actually was smaller and more interesting and it was my only means of contacting some people, but like Twitter it had become a cacophony of ads and insults and fakery that I could no longer tolerate. So, I left a post well ahead saying I was going and how to contact me outside FB. Nobody from there came here but a small handful keep in touch via email. Nonetheless I can't support such a harmful enterprise...

(Thanks for letting me rant in your mentions @nolan last one I promise!)...I've long thought FB was ruining the internet, but FB, and Twitter, damaged society as a whole. They encouraged us all to outsource our social labour--to abdicate control of it.Not only do we have to quit these sites if we have the ability, we have to get businesses, institutions, communities etc to remove their dependence on them so that the people relying on them don't need FB or Twitter either.

@nolan > including those building alternatives to Twitter, are still on Twitter.this gets me. i remember watching a talk pfrazee gave about creating decentralized digital social infrastructure -- a really profound talk about governance of software and communities alike -- and at the end he goes "and here's my twitter"like, i get it. twitter is the social register. but really, put your money where your mouth is, or i'm inclined to disbelieve you. i get that twitter is important to marketing, and facebook, and insta, and and and -- but that's not how they're using these platforms. they talk and talk about alternatives but then where does their next shitpost go? twitter. it feels like folks think of themselves and their audience as mutually captive.

@garbados @nolan oh yes, so much this.i get that as long as twitter has that de facto weight, it’s a big step to not advertise your twitter at all, but it’s literally zero cost to put your fedi account on the slides, to put it first, or in your ‘you can find me at…’-sentence, mention the priority of your preferences.
