Anyone have any thoughts on the #dell Latitude line of laptops?I'm thinking about picking up a used one to address some of the hardware issues I've had with my #system76 laptop

@codesections I've had a few... I still have one at 7 yrs. old that runs Ubuntu well enough... I have a couple of off-lease Precisions as well around the same age5-7 yrs. that have been dependable workhorses.

@codesections We use them at work. Great devices. 7xxx series is portable. 5xxx series is good, just avoid the 5440 and 50.

@codesections I had a Dell 13" XPS Linux edition, hardware was good except for the keyboard and trackpad which were horrible. I'm not sure these are the same on the Latitudes though.

@codesections I have a 3340 which I bought 3 and a half years ago with Ubuntu on it. At the time, the major factor for me was how cheap it was on sale, but I haven't regretted it. I do all my work on it, which is mostly reading and writing text. I wish it had a nicer screen sometimes. It looks and feels very sturdy.

@codesections I don't know anything about the dell but I have an HP elitebook, pretty happy with it, although it is like 10 years old https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/hp-elitebook-8460p

@codesections I just installed elementaryOS on my mom's Latitude. It runs really well overall. I haven't found any hardware incompatibilities at all. The BIOS is even easy to work with.

@codesections What problems are you having, and did you create a ticket with support?

@erikstl @codesections Bahaha! True true. I probably could have, but explaining about the commandline was difficult enough. She needs a graphical package manager... hehehe although I installed everything on her computer that she should ever need. Including 'Gourmet' the GNOME recipe app! Hehehe

@mmstick> What problems are you having [with the system76 laptop] Well, while the computer was still within its one-year warranty, I had the fan fail and then had some keys on the keyboard stop working. Replacing the fan and keyboard fixed the issue temporarily, but the new fan started acting up and the new keyboard stopped working after the warranty expired. I bought a replacement keyboard from system76, but that didn't fix it> did you create a ticket with support?Several, actually1/2

@mmstickI'm not particularly upset with system76—they didn't manufacture the computer, after all. And my understanding is that build-qualty issues are a major reason they brought desktop manufacturer in-house. And their support has been pretty good (though it did irk a bit to pay for the second keyboard). All that said, I don't really feel like I can trust the build quality of the laptop at this point, even if I manage to get the keyboard working. (I still might get a Thelio, though!)2/2

@codesections Which laptop is this? The build quality of all the laptops in our lab are still good today. I'm actually using an older Oryx Pro 2 model.Out of warranty, you still have access to the support staff for time you have the laptop. They can recommend what parts you'd need to order for that particular laptop. Part availability is usually pretty good.

@codesections I'm running an old Elitebook (8740p I think). I was able to upgrade the CPU and RAM pretty easily. It's a pretty zippy laptop and very stable for even heavy tasks.
