BTW: Internet archive has apologized for archiving a fediverse community, and kicked the person who did it off the team for speaking as if they had the views of the whole team. They have confirmed they will not archive things against people's willshttps://twitter.com/textfiles/status/1133235655931322368

@Canageek I thought Archive Team is not related to Internet Archive--did I get that wrong?

@Canageek worth noting that it was not the internet archive that did any of this, it was a third party going by the name "archive team" using their tools.

@Canageek B-but how does that translate to news sites? Archiving those keeps news websites in check for when they pull some shit.

@adoxographer @Canageek afaik there's some shared personnel (including Jason) and archive team uses archive.org's infrastructure

@aeonofdiscordShared personnel, but not acting on behalf of IA. They donate the data to IA and often times IA integrates it to their way back machine, but its a separate hobby project.@adoxographer @Canageek

@CanageekWe do need to figure out how to do this right though. So much great stuff here. I'm willing to have my stuff archived by them if they promise not to make it available until some time aftee my death or until I authorize it.

@freakazoid @Canageek AFAIK Internet Archive actually does have those mechanisms (intended to deal with copyright claims, to hide content until copyright expires). In any case, from what I've heard here and there, there is discussion of how to properly archive the Fediverse going on now (including actually archiving activities within the Fediverse, rather than just scraping public web views of it), it seems.

@Canageek I still don't trust them, but its nice to see there's at least SOME standards.

@adoxographer @Canageek It's not officially related - but its founder, Jason Scott, is a (prominent) employee of the Internet Archive, so people often conflate them.

@Canageek @apetresc but it seems you’re planning on leaving it that way. Why? Seems to me you should delete/rewrite/re-post.

@adoxographer @apetresc I figure it is better to leave it in the replies since the Fediverse is bad about deleting things after they've been boosted, a lot of instances don't support that, but it could screw up the reply chain

@aeonofdiscord @adoxographer @Canageek Archive Team was started by Jason before he was hired by Internet Archive. AFAIK the only shared infrastructure is that data collected is usually given to wayback machine for inclusion.

@foxwitch @aeonofdiscord @adoxographer Thanks, I've been told, but the corrections I've boosted haven't caught on in the way of the original.
