The guy used the experience of a few hundred prisoners to build the book and describe how gulags worked at the time.Now how and why do we trust its author?First of all: the West was already kind of aware of the existence of such camps The book only served to build a more detailed view of what they were.Second: when the book was published officially in Russia in 1989, it was criticized for coming to late / not for being full of liesAt this point of history, the USSR is going through Gorbatchev’s campaign of democratization.Even government official are like: “wait you should have added that we don’t do that anymore now people will think we still have them”On the same hand, we’re now 50 years after the original publication and nobody ever tried to prove the book wrong. I mean, even the regime acknowledged it’s veracity.Also, trying to actually read the book could help.You’ll notice that the issue with l’archipel du goulag is not its content but rather how politics tried to use the book to back up their unrelated claims about then world’s state. @jenny @Anoobispepega @Agni @Kro @igeljaeger don't forget the part where if you and the group of prisoners you're with are considered to be a burden and disposable, the whole group will be taken to a large pit and dumped inside and buried alive.Not out of cruelty, but out of practicality - it's much easier to transport living bodies to their grave than to arrange for the militia to put in effort to carry dead bodies.Very thoughtful of the communists.

Their mouths were stuffed with something soft and their arms were bound with cords behinds their backs. Then they were led out into the courtyard, where harnessed carts were waiting. The bound prisoners were piled on the carts, from five to seven at a time, and driven off to the ‘Gorka’ – the camp cemetery. On arrival they were tipped into big pits that had already been prepared and buried alive. Not out of brutality, no. It had been ascertained that when dragging and lifting them, it was much easier to cope with living people than with corpses."
