(1) Another piece of crap from WikiNausea."Thomas Jefferson's views on slavery are complex. Jefferson consistently spoke out against the turpitude of slavery and worked gradually to end the practice of slavery while he owned over 600 African-American people throughout his adult life and freed only seven."Never mind the "African-American people" crap, a sorry euphemism for slaves.Jefferson was right.Freeing his slaves out of the blue was not a good thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson_and_slavery

(2) When my g-g-grandfather, Capt. Richard Sutton, left for South America, he left an adoptive son, a nephew by his dead sister, who did not want to leave New England. As the chap, named after him, Richard Sutton Rust, was under age, Capt. Richard bought him an apprenticeship in Salem, close to his uncle Willliam Sutton. The kid had better dreams. So in less than two years he bought back the apprenticeship and put himself through what was then the best school (and Seminary) in New England.

(3) He entered Phillips Academy of Andover, at the time his cousin and adopted brother Richard Sutton Jr. and Oliver Wendell Holmes were in attendance.Richard S. Rust ruffled some feathers there because of his "extreme views on abolition" (we are talking 1830), and was expelled in 1834.

(4) He then went to Canaan, New Hampshire, and enrolled in Noyes Academy, the first integrated school in the US.But some neighbors did not like that and dragged the building with a team of oxen and burned the place down. All, including Richard, escaped with their lives, but as the black pupils were run our of yown, so did Richard left.

(5) His next stop was the Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham, Mass, more attuned to his likes. There he found many like-minded abolitionists. In fact, years later the school became a station in the Underground Railroad...that he helped establish.

(6) After graduating, he became principal of the Methodist seminary in New Hampshire, and later served as pastor in several NH and MA churches.During this time he became one of the founders of the Freedman's Aid Society. In 1858, he requested to be transferred to the Cincinnati Conference, and while there founded Wilberforce College, was pastor at Oberlin and founded Holly Hill College in MS (1866), now named Rust College in his honor.

(7) When he established Wilberforce, he enrolled his children, Richard Jr. and Charles H. making it an INTEGRATED college, not a "black" one.He probably turns in his grave everytime somebody refers to his creation as "black colleges." They were meant to be open institutions, not tools of racial segregation.Let me make a pause to introduce you to my 3rd great grand uncle,Dr. Richard Sutton Rust, A.M., D.D., LL.D.

(8) I have at home innumerable writings of his.Of the many wonderful things I read, probably the best relate to his reasoning behind the creation of integrated schools. You see, staunch abolitionist that he was to the point of risking his life regularly, he believed that out-righ abolition was a crime worse than slavery itself.Just as Jefferson did.

(9) To free, by the stroke of a pen, thousands upon thousands who had no experience, no resources and no education was to condemn them to a fate worse than slavery itself.Abandoning them, defenseless, at the mercy of "masters" who would be bound by no law to provide any minimum standard. His solution was a gradual release from slavery through education, training and opportunity to insert the new freemen into the productive, economic and social life of society. And that is what he did.

(10) That is no different than the approach favored by Jefferson or, for that matter, many of our Founding Fathers.Only the purveyors of intellectual garbage, race baiters and like scum condemn what was a good idea and the men who espoused it.The same who've turned the legacy of integrated and open schools of Dr. Rust's into "historically black colleges" that negate his efforts and prolong a policy of segregation my g-grand uncle found abominable over 150 years ago.

(11) So make no apologies for Jefferson. He was right. As were those who followed his and Washington's lead giving us an example of a generous policy worthy of emulation. And scoff at the ignoramuses who gnaw at their great bones finding "faults" that exist only in the dark recesses of their perverted minds.Shameless scoundrels, charlatans and buffoons who dupe imbeciles with race baiting, historical revisionism and other tools of their disreputable trade.FINIS.

@D6ebradelai I spent my entire career doing animal research at a large state university. I was pilloried regularly by leftist administrators because I refused to hire illiterate Somalis as animal care staff. They just wanted to feel righteous. They didn't know or care that they were setting up these people to fail.

@Debradelai Thomas Jefferson has come up as a discussion in class before. My response is always that he was a great man, a genius even. And like all great men, he was very complex -- he wrestled with the issue of slavery; he did and thought many other things besides -- great t things even. To reduce him to just one thing is giving him very little credit, and is something we shouldn't do to any human, as they are more than just one aspect. That usually gets the classroom thinking.

@Debradelai Must be because I find it to be fascinating how intelligent our founders were. They seem to have thought of everything except apparently how to keep the federal government from growing even though they tried their best.
