ThreadFor @Johnallen How many frames per second do we perceive? The answer could fill a book!Basically, nobody knows.

We perceive movement differently than we perceive stationary objects. The light also plays a part.Different parts of your eyes see frame rates differently. But visual perception can be trained.Practicing makes you better at it.

Here are the averages. We see light at about 60 hertz, or times per second. We see movement at around 90 frames per second. Those numbers are pretty much all we know for sure.We can see a super-fast flash of bright light better than a slower flash of dim light. And we can see 500 frames per second if we really concentrate.

I've been studying videos daily since 2014.All that practice has made it much easier for me to see both light and movement, even though my eyesight isn't very good.I take glaucoma eye drops, and I had pseudotumor cerebri, which damaged my optic nerves.Even so, I can still see things others can't.It's only through practice.

I'm able to NOTICE, which then allows me to replay and zero in.The image registers in my brain, even though I didn't actually se it clearly. That's how I caught this aircraft.I saw it the first time I watched the video. But I didn't see it clearly. I PERCEIVED something and went back to check it out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idKqatp70YE

@ThomasWic I'm not so great with videos, but can spot a 4 leaf clover immediately in a patch of clovers. For some reason they just pop out at me.Sorry to hear about the glaucoma. My father in law has had it since he was a child and is expecting to be completely blind before the end of the year. I hope you don't ever have to face that.

You have to enter a trancelike state. You clear your mind and simply wait.I see with my brain, not my eyes. And now, I always catch something. It's amazing how much is going on around us at all times.END

@marleneroseb They promise me that I'll be in the crematorium before the eyes go.It's a race!I hope the crematorium wins.I'm sorry about your father-in-law. Stem-cell replacement may find a cure soon.

@ThomasWic I experience that sometimes. It’s kinda scary because it’s a different reality. But I’ve learned to trust myself. We are amazing creatures if we just don’t get in the way.

@ThomasWic yeah, I would call that intuition in conjunction with expanded perception and yes, training makes us better at it. Another interesting thing about vision is that it is based on eye movement, thus the frame function. Stare at a spot on the wall and hold your eyes still and do not blink: within a few seconds the field of vision goes blank. Takes practice but it is cool.

@ThomasWic I am nowhere near as good as you, but I can tell you is a video gamer I am able to perceive much higher frames per second than most people. It's a byproduct of the industry to be sure, but many games are judged on the number of frames per second one can get out of them from various graphics cards. Thus,it isn't just a number displayed in a corner but many of us gamers can actually perceive the difference especially in quick-moving games.

@ThomasWic Wow, my grandson was diagnosed with pseudo tumor cerebri at four months. He thankfully has no ill effects that we know about. He just turned 15.

@ThomasWic Frames per second is what I was trying to get to.I’m old enough to remember when editors of film would insert images such as drinking a Coke, that Human eyes couldn’t see of a product to entice the brain of wanting that product, or at least think about it before the practice was outlawed.

@ThomasWic Eye training is an invaluable pursuit. The French chemist Claude Bernard said a good observer could distinguish 50 separate qualities to the flame of a burning candle.
