The background is that Obama toppled Gaddafi and left two governments: one in Tripoli and one in Tobruk.The armed forces of the Tobruk government are advancing on Tripoli, but the commander--an American citizen named Khalifa Haftar--has indicated that he's willing to negotiate.

Haftar recently spoke with trump by telephone.My guess is that he's positioning himself for talks, the way we've positioned ourselves in the Middle East by first sending in carrier strike groups.Forget the stenographers of the press. They're useless.Let's look at the video.

This guy fired a heavy machine gun, but then he gave orders.Usually commanders DIRECT fire instead of using the weapons themselves.Unless he's in charge of the whole charade and is making sure that it's dramatic enough.

Libya is a mess.But I don't think things are playing out the way they seem.The FEAR of another civil war is real.But I think regional actors are using that fear to make people sit down and talk.In the past, the talkers were safe, far from the fighting.NOW, the talkers have the enemy at the gates. I think that was the only way to make them take the talks seriously.

As always, I could be wrong.But I just don't think that the regional powers are allowing Libya to simply spiral out of control.I think--as in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen--the press is fed a narrative, but the reality behind the scenes is quite different.Call it the Trumpification of geopolitics and war.END

@ThomasWic I am not as learned as you when it comes to such things, but as a grandma I can usually spot someone doing something that is placing themself in unnecessary danger.Would a person hang on a gun like this while they are actually trying to stay alive through the whole ordeal?All he needs is for his right foot to slip and he would land hard on that truck corner. @ThomasWic Given the evidence you've shown in the past for the care that Trump and the GCC show for civilians-- and for any combatants who will stand down when given the chance-- you are right to think that they wouldn't let Libya continue to be the disaster it's been. They absolutely would work to save that country and get rid of the bad actors. Every country they rescue is one less place that the thugs can control. One more country with freedom on its horizon. Hopefully.

@ThomasWic That would make sense. Things were moving ahead rapidly, Haftar got to Tripoli, and then the whole thing seemed to stall, but not with the bloodbath fighting in Tripoli that was expected.It would also bring Trump's call to Haftar into a better context.
