I honestly don't understand how I'm supposed to go to the doctor the Right Way. What is the point of my primary care physician? What do they treat? It's really frustrating to try to figure out how I'm supposed to get treatment for things. I don't see the point of a primary doctor at all except to waste my time and money. This system is designed for rich people who have flexible work schedules. When am I supposed to go to the Dr???? Idgi.

Please do not @ me explaining how to see the doctor. I cannot see a doctor here even though I have "good insurance" because being insured is not the only obstacle in getting care. First of all, understanding the medical system is a set of knowledge that only people who grew up with standard American insurance understand. I do not seek treatment the way my middle class peers do.

@gazelle i literally do not know it doens't make any sense i live out of urgent care because it's the only way to seek medical treatment that logically makes sense to me, like, i have a problem i see a doctor they fix the problem i leave 🤷

@gazelle right like i *think* it's something to do with like, preventative care??? but preventative care is absolutely a luxury of the upper/upper middle class and drs give me enough anxiety as it is so unless im literally in pain, you are not getting me into a drs office

@gazelle @pbandkate Okay so, I find having a PCP incredibly useful, but I think it's all predicated on having a good PCP who cares. My primary also sees half my family, and when my other doctors have fallen out of my network/my insurance has changed, she'll write scripts until I find a new psychiatrist/pulmonologist/etc. She has my full medical history + fam history so if i need records/xrays/whatever they're all in her files.

@gazelle @pbandkate lastly, when i like, broke my foot, or we found out my brother had a heart condition that runs in families, she's referred me to doctors that she knows or work closely with her to make sure my new treatments don't conflict and that i can get seen promptly, she'll also write me prescriptions if i just e-mail her and explain a situation to her, since i've been seeing her for almost a decade now.

@gazelle @pbandkate sorry i wasn't trying to talk over you on this, just give a perspective where PCPs are productive.

@pbandkate @Jewbacchus yeah jewbacchus the point is more that people who grew up without medical access don't use medical systems the same way as people who did largely because they don't know how and also because a lot of times it's just not an option. For example, I grew up with Planned Parenthood so I routinely get gyno exams. I did not grow up with dental care so I rarely go to the dentist. Does that not make sense?
