To Google Play users, I didn't remove the app from the Playstore but it won't receive new updates.Only Fdroid and the paid version will receive them. The new version was moved here :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.fedilab.android#Fedilab

@tom79 This is pretty bad news for some of my friends who are using Fedilab daily while not being ready to use fdroid yet. What motivated this change if I may?

@kaiyouWhat stops your friends from using f-droid?

@bn4t The unfortunate dominant position of Google. We spent years educating people not to trust and install software from random websites for the sake of their security, and now we ask them the exact opposit. We ask them to browse the fdroid website, download a binary blob, and click install. Then Android warns this is pretty insecure and risky, and they have to manually setup an exception. Those who are not lost at this point have been well educated never to add security exceptions.

@bn4tOf course the fdroid built packages are of high quality, and they would be far better off using them than trusting Play Store search engine to find the right package, hope that it is not a scam, and pray again that trackers will have only limited impact on their security, privacy and freedom. But in the process of setting this up, they are reminded every step of the way that it is not standard and probably risky.

@kaiyouIf they use it daily why not just pay for it ? It's a one time thing and the price is very low. + they support the great work of @tom79

@Misuftw@tom79Oh. So my understanding was wrong. The paid version will be updated just like the current one is? Then if it is a matter of funding the development efforts of tom79, I think it is alright.I thought the problem was updating the Google Play version was too difficult and you did not wish to do it anymore. What will happen to local data when switching application id? Is there a way to backup my settings?

@Misuftw @tom79Some thoughts on funding development though. Often (not my case but still) people cannot afford to buy applications, or many of them. Imposing a price per user is then both a strain on the user base and feedback, and on users themselves.Accepting donations has proved quite well in the past years to be a relevant way of ensuring revenue while contributing to free software. I would be glad to make a monthly donation to Fedilab developers!

@tom79 Nope. I have no choice of the store I must use on my phone. But I have the choice of the apps I put on the phone. Bye.

@schaptal @tom79 Of course you could just pay about 2$ once and support an App Developer and continue using the app. 🙄

@kaiyou @bn4t If they don't want to take that "risk", they could just support the app that they use daily with a one time $2.49 payment?

@tom79 Thanks, I did the update from the old to the new version right away. The price is more than fair for the app from you.So hopefully a little more money will come in for you and your expenses.

@DocAimless @tom79 Check that installing the fdroid version -- which i believe requires uninstalling the gplay version -- doesn't trigger an automated refund of the version you bought because you uninstalled the gplay version!

@kaiyou yeah it was trying that route (donations) that got the old version canned by Google Play, hence developer moved to a paid version for the Play store. See their replies / recent tweets for more detail, eg whatever thread ends @ https://toot.cafe/@xurizaemon/102135951192660362

@kaiyou @bn4t and the funny thing is that you first have to make an exception for the browser you're using, which actually is a dangerous change (because it isn't a 1x exception last time I checked) and then give F-Droid the exception as well (which isn't dangerous IMHO). So after installing the store you have to revoke the exception for your browser 🙃
