I'm an American who is deeply sad about the state of the nation. If you hate the United States, feel free to unfollow me.I'm a proud Jew who believes in the need for a safe place for Jews to live, in other words, a Zionist. I am deeply unhappy about the current government in Israel. If you hate Israel, feel free to unfollow me.

@emacsen I'm still trying to figure out how to effectively express my hate for America. Not sure if unfollowing is the solution. I'm considering a complete (personal) embargo on American culture and services

@emacsen fortunately you have other choices than getting emotional about statepolitics or religion and engage with people that have goals in common with you that do not relate to this matter

@emacsen Please don't read this the wrong way, but what's the difference between me, for example, wanting any place to be safe for anyone (at least socially, if not geographically), and what you call Zionism?

@zge I'm part of a minority that has been targeted specifically by many leaders and attempted to be exterminated many times. This isn't a vague notion for me- it's knowing how my own grandparents were persecuted, tortured and thrown in labor/death camps.

@Transflux You listen to (or are at least a follower on the fediverse of ) @librelounge , which is a podcast made by two American citizens (I'm a dual citizen but one of those is American), produced and edited in the US.If you enjoy our work, then you can see the good parts of the US and the culture we grew up in and live in.

@emacsen @librelounge I just looked into it once a bit... I met your partner once. Tho he was generally nice he showed typical personality traits that make the Americans look weird. I know that problem. I have American friends, loves and appreciate a lot of stuff coming from there.I know that's not a solution but I think it's a step that will bring new perspectives

@emacsenSo to the goyim this might come off as trolling, but it's just a good old maclokes lshem shamayim. So if you say Jews just need a safe place why does that need to be in the Land of Israel? That is one of the most unsafe regions of the world. Why do we need to be in one place? Why not haven cities like New square or lakewood?

@yisraeldov There is no reason to use offensive language. Please don't do so in the future where I'm concerned. As for why the specific land.. it's where the UN gave and unless we have another, there's not much to talk about. But I also believe in democracy and the Israeli government is increasingly nonsecular (compared to the 50s, 60s, 70s). This makes living there unappealing to me personally. As a Jew I support Israel's right to exist, while being disgusted by the Bibi govt.

@emacsen Ok, so I am at a total loss as to what offensive language I used. So if you can clarify I'll try to accommodate if I can.Does non-secular another way of saying religious? What about my proposal of haven cities?

@yisraeldov "Goyum" is not how I'd talk about gentiles.I believe that in a Western democracy, there is a need to keep the government and religion separate. We see terrible acts in Israel due to the mixing. As for town safe-havens... I live in NYC. If there is a safe city for Jews outside Israel, it's here.As for towns- you mean like https://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/24/nyregion/24jersey.html or what happened in East Ramapo, New York?We need secular governments.

@emacsen Lots to get into here. My personal opinion, we probably agree, governments should be neutral when it comes to religion. But they should also stay out of religion. I think the US does an OK job of this. I think I line up as libertarian, in that gov should not bother you if your not infringing on someone else. (That is until Moshiach, comes ). Governments are bad at religion and Ideology, leave that to G-d .

@emacsen As for "Goyim" why do you find it offensive? In Hebrew I think it is probably the least offensive way. I actually had to had in a legal document, and when it said the secular date it said "according to the counting of the goyim" . Not trying to be offensive, but I honestly don't understand why that is offensive to you. What connotation does it have for you that some one from my background doesn't hear?

@yisraeldov The correct English term is "Gentiles" or "Non-Jews".

😏 @emacsen First of all, why do you find "incorrect" English as offensive?Second. "Goy" is in Miriam Webster and oxford. So what makes it more or less "correct" ?Third, why did you not take offensive to the other Hebrew/Yiddish words that I used?

@yisraeldov I also want to see religion out of government. Ie these religious people were taking govt money and then imposing religious law:https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/20/nyregion/bus-segregation-of-jewish-women-prompts-review.htmlBig NOPE for me.

@yisraeldov It's an offensive term in English. Why is "shit' offensive? Why is "fuck" offensive? Who decides these things? Goyum is an offensive word in English.

@emacsen Those other words one can explain why they are offensive. They deal with things that make people uncomfortable to discuss. Additionally they have connotations other than the simple meaning.

@emacsen There is a difference though between you want religion out of the government and you want religious people out of the government. Religious people have the same right to representation as the rest of the citizens. I don't think that it should matter what the source of the law, the gov should not impose anything on the citizens, except what is needed for said citizens ability to live their life as they/ or their community see fit.
