@Nikolai_Kingsley I really love geometric solids. Yanno, they actually found a newer one after the scutoid last year. I guess it must be the cutoid cuz here you are!

@Nikolai_Kingsley So real talk what's your alien's whole thing, I'm very intrigued what your headcanon is, fellow writer friend.I will sit right here and listen.

@Lunostophiles i... just... look at the way primates behave, and i don't want to be a part of that. and when i was younger i wrote a lot of SF, trying to create what the editor John Campbell was always asking his writers for: "give me an alien that thinks differently from a man, but better."still working on that. perhaps less territoriality.i feel i should be asking you something similar - is that rude?

@Nikolai_Kingsley I like people who look at things differently. And it is not rude! I'm many things, but if we were going purely by species, it's Cheshire.I used to/still am a Cheshire cat. But I decided Cheshire is the species, and whatever comes after is the outfit for the day. I'm incredibly genderfluid and this sort of...meshes up with that.

@Lunostophiles you do have to respect the way felines relax. "slack" is important to us in the Church of the Subgenius.it's kind of a shame the writers of most SF feline aliens emphasize the savage hunter aspect rather than the "stares into space for eight hours without moving" aspect.

@Nikolai_Kingsley When, on your best day, you are thinking on a level some people only achieve when they are four tabs of acid in, you get used to people not getting you.If I was an alien, and I definitely am, I'd be a fancy catman. You could come and hang out.

@Lunostophiles i'd be worried that scritching behind your ears might be condescending :othere's some kind of sketch comedy in that. carnivorous alien trying to make conversation with an herbivore."would it help if i ran like crazy?""tease!"

@Lunostophiles a true omnivore should be able to eat anything. or anyone, as long as it's consensual - that means not eating anything from non-sentient species.. unless they don't have any capacity for sentience (like most plants). this gives sentients a lot of room to argue (or negotiate) over dinner, which is part of the experience.where? well - But then again, in this group, we don't need a reason. We just need a place.- Nurz Ratchet, alt.tasteless

@Nikolai_Kingsley Yes but are we the cuckoos, or the nest?Honestly I'd much rather surround myself with the not-yet-knowable, like you! Like, are you exoskeletal*? Or is it more like armour, or a secondary defensive carapace?*or are you just happy to see me

@Lunostophiles imagine a swarm that has settled into specialist roles to the extent they mimic organs, limbs and senses, to the degree that reverting is like getting out of bed on a cold morning. you probably could, but gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahand it only looks like an exoskeleton because there's nobody renting it at the moment.

@Nikolai_Kingsley Ooh! A sort of nanocreature. A hive mind? Is there some other term you prefer?I mean, I consider Cheshiredom to be a coalescing of entropy into a mutable, shifting form so. I know definitions are difficult and un-apt.

@Lunostophiles hive mind? eww! have you ever tried to talk to an autonomous collective? it's like dealing with amazon customer support!no.. you replace a part, and another part, and you realise you need some kind of standard interface, and eventually you get something where you can swap this part for that part, mostly.. "Anthology Intelligence" being a nice way of saying the brain runs the genitals, most of the time.

@Lunostophiles intrigued - how far down does Cheshiredom go? are you ever worried about diffusing completely? i appreciate the allure of atomized design, but i'd be scared to go too deep.

@Nikolai_Kingsley I love the term anthology intelligence. That's fantastically descriptive. And I have dealt with that.So you're more like...a sentient Ship of Theseus except you don't have the emotional trouble of "am I the same when I replace parts" because if it's a part of yours, it's yours.

@Nikolai_Kingsley Oh, when Cheshires get too discordant they just sorta...jitter apart and reform as a new Cheshire. They add a few new bits from the universe, you get a different name and some different personality tropes but you are effectively an emotional & mental continuance of the last. Also depending on which multiverse I slip into, my form will change to fit the folklore, fears, hopes, and dreams of whoever I meet.

@Lunostophiles i'm not above exchanging parts with others, as long as i can write a driver for it. what really rings my bell is acting as an environment suit for another sentient, encasing them completely, keeping them safe and..entertaining them when they get bored.

@Lunostophiles modify... hmm.. I guess I could sample some DNA - if present - and code a prionic update that can alter targeted cells, do some programmed apoptosis here, some induced replication there, re-purpose a few things if someone wanted to grow a tail or something, but it's not my field of expertise. *waggles sensor booms* i do know a few systems who like to sculpt..chat avenues.. sheramil@gmail.com ? unless you don't want google watching.
