If you REALLY doubt that there are people in society who get off on watching poor people do horrible things for money, and get off on looking at their exhaustion and misery, you're fucking naive.

It's not as simple as "le capitalism causes le problem xD" either, just face reality: There are evil people in the world who really, really love watching "lesser" people suffer. It happens under any ~system~.The fucked up part is, it's quite easy to accidentally become one. Look at the way that even society's poorest and most downtrodden people sneer at "benefits cheats" getting long sentences and other crap, or sneer at Assange getting arrested.

So yeah, next time you go to work and you clock in and you're tired as fuck, or working while sick becuase you can't afford to take a sick day, or next time your money and time are wasted, or you look miserable on a commuter train, or whatever else, remember that someone somewhere is watching and LAUGHING at you. Your misery is actually giving them PLEASURE. It is not enough that you work for their benefit. You must also be miserable. If they could snap their fingers and render you impotent, they would. If they could make your lover fall out of love with you, they would. If they could give your parents alzheimers, they would. And no, those of you who "aren't poor" becuase you earn, what, $60k a year or something? $90k even? You're not immune to it. You're just a slightly more refined meal for the slightly more discerning pallette. When you lose your job due to redundancy, or your wife finally gets a disease so fucked up that your healthcare plan doesn't cover it, or your kid dies in a school shooting?Someone "in charge" of you is laughing at you. To them, the bigger you are, the harder you fall. Like bringing down a whale for sport.Wake up to it.

@solidsanek Exactly. It turns my fucking stomach that there are idiots walking around on the internet posting "le redpilled xddd" images of anime girls as le nazis defending their huwaite heritage or whatever as though they've actually understood what's FUCKING going on at all. Kaiji is the legitimate most "redpilled" series ever made in that it has the clearest eyes. The people in it are fodder, torture toys.

@DetectiveHyde >There are evil people in the world who really, really love watching "lesser" people suffer. It happens under any ~system~.Elections were held in my country in February of this year, the party in power that is currently leaving has decided to do everything they can to boycott everything in the country, they have diverted money destined to medicine and running water to buying police cars, it's likely that two of the largest cities in the country will be without running water for about a month, major hospitals don't have any medicine.People have hope for the new president, but even if his intentions of doing good are legitimate, there are greater powers than him that won't allow him to do actual good, it's all fucked.

@wolf480pl @DetectiveHyde @solidsanek SCHAUDENFREUDE (which refers to minor inconveniences, like laughing at my friend trip in her high heels or something, not sadistic pleasure from real suffering)Also that's a nebulous exercise because it requires assuming the character and values of whoever is in that position and the implications of said position if you take it as is.The better thing to consider is whether or not you could find a way to either create freedom for yourself while remaining in adherence to your values, and that doesn't have to be in the literal sense either. Pursuits of mind or the soul or perfection of a craft may reveal a certain freedom or happiness for someone. They may even help them find freedom and happiness for others.

@DetectiveHydeIn any system where someone can have power over someone else, cruel and evil people will seek out that power and abuse it. And then make up reasons for why you should accept their abuse.Be it a corporation, government, or even a 'flat' communal group, they will seek out whatever power and influence they can abuse.People who seek out power do it for their own reasons. Some do it for good, some for evil. I find that expecting assholes is safer.

I work at a small company now, about fifty people, and the CEO is there working with everyone else. He says hey to me on my smoke breaks. You pay someone to work because you want the work done. People do the work because they get cash for their labor. If you are a redundant cog that can be replaced, expect that to happen and make yourself difficult to replace by doing what other people cannot or will not.

@p @DetectiveHyde > If you are a redundant cog that can be replaced, expect that to happen and make yourself difficult to replace by doing what other people cannot or will not. This is a miserable way of working, make a company depend so much on you and watch as you are unable to take vacations for years, I watched this happen to a former boss of mine. The guy went almost 3 years without a vacation, and even when he finally was able to take one he was in a position that required him to be able to answer his phone almost 24/7. He must have seemed like the happiest person on earth when he quit his job a few months ago.

@orekix when Gordon Brown lost the election to David Cameron in 2010, he left a note on the desk saying "welcome to downing street, there's no money left, good luck!"Records showed that the government had been on quite the spending spree in the space between losing the election and handing power over.Spending on, seemingly, nothing.

@wolf480pl @solidsanek I have, yes. The last time was when I realised that I had forced Bricky to explain his cheating on Sim by saying he was a "vulnerable little boy and got groomed", lol. The fact that he had spent the last 2 years trying to convince her he was ~manly~ (even though he's a scrawny vegan manlet) and I made him adopt a position of vulnerable ingratiation was delicious. But that was revenge. He hurt my closest one.I am many things, but dysfunctional is not one of them. When I see a weak thing, I want to help it grow and thrive. I never pulled the wings off insects as a child. I nursed injured bees back to health with sugar water when they flew into the windows. If anything, P's response to this post proves that politics has no place for belief in evil. And thus, evil thrives.

@orekix @DetectiveHyde That is not at all what I meant. If you can't take a vacation, either you are doing it wrong or your manager is doing it wrong. If they'd have a bad time if they fired you or you quit, that's what makes you unique to a profit-seeking entity. If they'd suffer if you took a day off, that's no good.

@DetectiveHyde @solidsanek My point is, evil is in each of us. Depending on our efforts, but also on circumstances, we can suppress it.But being in a position of power - especially unaccountable, absolute power - tends to bring the worst out of people. There's two wolves fighting inside each of us. Which one will win? The one we feed.

@wolf480pl @solidsanek I have given this much thought, and I respect you for phrasing it this way and for clearly having thought about it, but I do disagree with your conclusions. To me, what is within all of us is *darkness*, which is different from evil. It's hard to explain. It's instinctive and unconscious.A good illustration might be this.Your mother is raped. You find her rapist. He is at your mercy. You could end his life swiftly, yet you do not. You prolong his suffering. This is darkness.vsYou find a gravely injured rabbit. You have never seen it before. It will not survive its injuries. You could put it out of its misery, kill it for food, or allow the saga to play out without your interference. Instead, you kneel down and torture it with your knife for several hours. This is evil.

@DetectiveHyde @p tbh I don't think anyone enjoys me suffering bc I don't think they care that much. I am just a cog in the machine. I doubt the higher ups even see me as a human I'm pretty sure we're all numbers to them. I don't even think the rich people in power are really thinking about what they're doing to us. They mainly realize if they charge us overtime and pay us less they make more money. I think we're sort of a means to the end. The farmer does not hate the the animals they slaughter or the the plants they pick.

@p @orekix I have no idea what that is. My point was simply that the development of agriculture marked the transition from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic era, and the point at which humans started to build larger settlements for agricultural efficiency and tot ake advantage of the increased food yield that a static patch of ground could now yield. (as opposed to hunting and gathering, which could only support very limited numbers in a stable settlement, or slightly larger numbers in nomadic groups.)The division of labour along organisational lines rather than intuitive lines effectively began with this development. The overspecialisation of labour led to the situation you namedropped - subsistence farming - in which a family of people know only one skill (agriculture) and, in the absence of wider societal structure, can use it only to subsistence farm.In contrast to this, Paleolithic man, by his very nature, had to have a wider skillset in order to survive. One may have been "the best at this thing" in a tribe but would by no means have had "this thing" as their only skill. This adaptability enabled a fuller range of life and a more immediate relationship with natural surroundings; namely, less time was spent sewing, and more was spent reaping. My point is that subsistence farming, justifiably considered an undesireable existence, is a considerably worse way of living than the paleolithic lifestyle. If you want contemporary examples, compare uninterrupted (as in, not forced into modern societal structure by aggressive social reform) indigenous peoples, such as those in parts of the Amazon basin or the Australian outback, with the existence of being a subsistence farmer in a "country" that has had its nomadic routes interrupted and disturbed by the drawing of national borders, such as Afghanistan or Iraq.

@GoldPeaPuffer @p Generalisations about groups of people based on occupation. They make no sense whatsoever.Observe abbatoir staff. Most merely get on with their uncerremonious job of slaughtering animals for meat on a production line. But every now and then, we get fucked up leaked videos of abbatoir workers torturing animals for fun before they kill them.Or what about the famous Taliban prisoners scandal? With that female American soldier posing with their stripped, electrocuted, tortured bodies, bags over their heads?Or what about the police who seek out opportunities for brutality with active sadism, as opposed to the workaday "just doing their job" cops who follow orders and play by the book?Evil is not a problem that can be approached with rationalism.
