hate the whole idea of having a “green thumb” or a “black thumb.” i killed my first plant and was like “well this isn’t a thing i’m capable of.”caring for plants is something you learn; no one inherently knows how to keep a garden alive.

my plants bring me so much happiness, especially in the winter months when SAD kicks in. i’m glad i tried again and didn’t just resign to not having a “green thumb.”

if you’re a serial plant killer, advice: make note of every kind of plant you buy. try different kinds, make sure you understand their needs, and if you fail try to figure out why. sometimes the climate in your home just isn’t fit for certain plants while others will thrive.

i also started having better luck when i began using neem oil as a preventative measure every time i brought a new plant home. it’s usually fairly inexpensive, my spray bottle was $10, and it’s a natural oil that doesn’t harm most plants unless used in excess.

oh and another piece of advice: DO NOT START WITH A SUCCULENT. yeah they need less water but they’re SO easy to overwater and they can just rot away. if you’re really set on succulents, try a zebra haworthia first. make sure it’s in a pot with good drainage

try to water all your plants (but ESPECIALLY succulents) with an empty ketchup bottle of water. often they sell these at department stores or the dollar store. these bottles help you aim better, as not to get water in the center of the plant, which can cause rot.

some plants can be misted (&can even benefit!) and here’s the rule i use: leathery/grassy leaves: good to go! fleshy/fat leaves: do Not!i find fleshy leaves have a hard time drying off and will often rot

can’t afford plants? uncle Perry has you covered!most malls have pothos as a display plant since it can take some indoor abuse. the nicer the mall, the nicer the pothos usually. you can sneak some clippings from these and carry them home in a purse or bag.
