we don't need text formatting because we have unicode babey unicode font hackery is✅ compatible with pretty much everything except on some devices where it just displays as white squares but thats good enough✅ completely unintuitive so you can prove that you're cooler than other people by knowing how to make the 𝔀𝓪𝓬𝓴𝔂 𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓵𝔂 𝓵𝓮𝓽𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓼✅ not actually formatting at all✅ check it out you can do 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 and 𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑐 and even 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉 all using different character sets meaning that some devices support some and not others✅ hey people with screen readers? get fucked

@lynnesbian Yes, using HTML bold tags or Unicode bold character variants are the only two options. Humans cannot communicate without using bold text and it is absolutely instrumental in every message. It is impossible to simply avoid Unicode character variants if you think they are bad for screen readers.

@Gargron what I'm saying is that if bold tags were built in people would stop relying on these workaroundsi never use the unicode hack stuff myself but i still encounter it frequently enough for it to be an issue, especially on my phone which doesn't support that block of unicode and just renders blank boxes

@lynnesbian Yeah but it's also valid to unfollow people who do that. Nobody does it on my home feed, and I never saw it on the federated timeline either.People who frame this issue as an issue of accessibility are being disingenious because having bold or italic text is not an actual necessity. People just use them for jokes, and far more often they use zalgo and full-width text (vapourwave), or even gothic text.

@Gargron @lynnesbian if you don't allow proper bold text, and don't strip misused* Unicode math characters, people will do the latter. if you don't want people bolding text on your instance, please at least consider blocking the bad alternative*nobody uses them for math, pretty much, especially on fediverse where there's an instance with proper LaTeX

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron He’s actually right about this one thing, though … I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen people using Unicode fake-bold or fake-italics to indicate emphasis on this site. You know what I DO see people using? ALL-CAPS, or text formatting like *asterisks* that evolved as substitutes on previous platforms that didn’t support rich text or character sets beyond ASCII.And I’m the same way - I dramatically overuse italics for emphasis. But I didn’t *stop* doing that when I came to this site … I just kept using asterisks! (I’m actually having to escape all my asterisks because Monsterpit uses a fork that DOES have Markdown support, but I assure you, I wasn’t using them any *less* before then)When people do use wacky Unicode text, it’s mostly just for *playfulness* reasons, like “hey look what I found hiding in the character set”. The majority of stuff people do with Unicode pseudo-text is way too broad to support with HTML anyway.

@SenorOblong @Gargron @lynnesbian hint: outside Mastodon, we all have text formatting, *and* we *do* use it for these purposes. Mastodon users don't see this because all they *can* see is unicrud.

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron So what?Yes, text formatting is convenient. (Lord knows I like it, I’m an absolute italics slut) But it’s not a requirement for communication, and nor is it an accessibility issue to lack it. Not every platform needs to support rich text!

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron “Stockholm sydrome” seems a bit rich, given that I *am* on an instance that has rich text, use it so frequently as to be instinctive (I had to manually go back and escape all my asterisks because I’m not 100% sure the formatting will translate from Monsterpit -> Pleroma), and do most of my talking on Discord (which also supports rich text). But IRC, 4chan, Twitter, and I think Facebook(?) don’t support it, and I don’t really think they’re all that much lesser for it.

@Gargron On the topic of known character variants, you can always search and replace them with their more conventional code points upon posting (saving a few bytes in the database in the process) or upon rendering, perhaps even per user configuration settings.I won't suggest it's a completely solved problem, but similar methods were used to show Unicode apps in pure text displays before. Suggesting it's "impossible" is disingenuous.@kaniini@lynnesbian

@SenorOblong @Gargron @lynnesbian also IRC does support rich text.4chan, Twitter and Facebook are some of the most absolutely vile places on the Internet. rich text formatting may help to alleviate conflict on those platforms by allowing people to better emphasize sarcasm and jokes.

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron Last I used IRC, it only supported fake-formatting, where you’d type like /this/ or like this and those would be transmitted - asterisks or slashes and all - to another client, which would then recognize them and render it in italics without actually removing the original asterisks/slashes. The protocol itself didn’t include them … and so support on that level could be added by any Mastodon client without the instance itself having to support it. I just straight up forgot about Colored text though, somehow, despite all my years of Homestuck roleplaying, so you’ve got me there.
