@thor given that the upgrade is most likely going to be another full download, rather than a patchset, means that large amounts will still have to come down the pipe to get the device working though.

@thor would need a way to verify that the software isnt tampered somewhere along the way, but sounds like a nice idea

@thor What I'm thinking is that to create and support such devices, taking the traditional installation paths for the software on them is unlikely to be the right approach. First, you _want_ update patches instead of full installers for updates, but that means the part of the file system where the apps are installed should be totally locked down to avoid patch rejects. At this point you might as well just treat it as firmware updates.

@thor Next, you want some way of verifying that the updates are legit, for the sake of security. As well, most updates will be security updates, not feature updates, which means you don't want devices running older versions for any real length of time. That's where my biggest concern actually comes in, why I don't like the idea of shipping an older version of software and letting the user run the device without updating first.

@thor The update model of recent game consoles might be the best course of action, where you can't connect until the system is up to date. Or look at OpenWRT and similar open source router platforms for a system where updates are user-controlled instead of device-controlled.
