in 5 years/with every new redesign all new cars and light trucks should be at least plug-in hybrids, since all electric/hydrogen still have feasibility issues but plug-in hybrids lack them. this would help bootstrap charging infrastructure by providing the demand and getting people used to it.

@DJWalnutThere are at least two problems with plug-in hybrids: a plug-in hybrids that takes battery diving seriously is essentially an electric vehicle with an additional fossil-fuel drive system (engine, generator, fuel tank) sufficient to drive it around, and is therefore necessary a big, heavy, energy-intensive vehicle. On the other hand car makers can, and will to satisfy regulatory rules, build "plug-in hybrids" with toy batteries.

@anne it is a half-baked idea. the former complaint doesn't be an issue for models currently in use, and the latter seems easy to regulate around. the tech is here and it works. most people just want something that drives, and they'd love the savings on fuel

@lyliawisteria @anne I'm more of a trolleybus kinda girl, personally. put a small battery in it for off-wire operation when you need to go off-wire for a little bit because of something. back up the grid with a flywheel system to keep it running through power outages

@DJWalnutI have the daily choice between electric trams, electric trains, and an electric metro system. All good. The key is you have to design your cities to work for public transit.@lyliawisteria

@DJWalnut @anne Ottawa used to have that system, until GM twisted Andrew Haydon's rubber arm, and got the rails ripped out and replaced with only buses.

@DJWalnut @anne it has taken 50 years, starting with the creation of a transitway trench road in the 70s, to be converted to rail "some day". we're finally coming to the end of the first phase of constructing city-wide light rail, started about ten years ago.
