@ProfWorr If karma is real - then we all really do get what we deserve. What does that say about kids who get cancer?I am of the opinion that life is unfair and that we should be damned glad of that.

@PakkonenCT So, this is an old philosophical thing called theodicy, basically, how can an omnibenevolent, omniscient, and all all-powerful thing allow the type of shit we see in our world? Riddle me

@ProfWorr Well I don't claim any all powerful being - but if people believe that some governing law or force or whatever referred to here as karma - is in effect then the claims of at least benevolence are dubious.

@ProfWorr Omniscience for example doesn't require omnipresence nor does it require anything beyond apathy.

@ProfWorr but more as a concept - karma means you get what you deserve based on your own actions in life. Good or bad. It isn't a Christian belief - it's a Hindu thing that's gone viral in the larger culture. It sounds nice when applied to enemies but when you apply it randomly it starts to look unsavory. Here at #NASocial/ #NAshow it's used as a positive; but broadly if you were to select a random person and tell em they are getting what they deserve - they might not react well ahaha.

@PakkonenCT @ProfWorr isn't Karma the metric that determines how you are reincarnated?

@grocerybag @ProfWorr uhhh I think that's something elseKarma (car-ma) is a word meaning the result of a person's actions as well as the actions themselves. It is a term about the cycle of cause and effect. According to the theory of Karma, what happens to a person, happens because they caused it with their actions. It is an important part of many religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

@grocerybag @ProfWorr a bit of column A & BThe Vedas, does not mention the doctrine of Karma and rebirth but mention the belief in an afterlife. It is in the early Upanishads, which are pre-Buddha and pre-Mahavira, where these ideas are beginning to develope.[37] Detailed descriptions first appear around the mid 1st millennium BCE in diverse traditions, including Buddhism, Jainism and various schools of Hindu philosophy, each of which gave unique expression to the general principle.[3]#BoK

@PakkonenCT @ProfWorr You should check out Alan Watts for less literal minded discussions about this sort of thing. The problem with the western way of thinking is that everything needs an instruction manual and has to be explained. People achieve enlightenment or good karma or whatever but because it isn't articulated, like there isn't an alert on your apple watch that says you've reached your mindfulness goal - most people miss it.

@PakkonenCT @ProfWorr once upon a time I made a new years resolution to elevate my consciousness, kind of as a joke, until I accidentally achieved enlightenment. It only lasts for a second, kind of like a laughing/crying thing, but now I have trouble talking to people.
