I want to get a server I can run at home for file archival but I don’t really know that much about it. I was looking at FreeNAS but I don’t know if there are alternatives that could be better

Also unsure on what kind of hardware I need. I don’t want to use a Raspberry Pi because I want to setup a proper ZFS drive pool and want it to be reliable

@marmite I think for ZFS ECC ram is highly recommend, so an old server might be the best bet

@6a62 I hadn’t thought of doing that!! Is there something I should look for? Other than ECC

@marmite not sure tbh, just make sure it has enough ports & bays for all the drives you want I guess? Maybe ask Ami, I think she has some server stuff

@marmite A friend of mine bought a hp proliant microserver on ebay some time ago and is very happy with it. Depending which version they are pretty cheap to get.

@marmite something in this form factor might be nice? smol & with 4 drive bays. Probably worth having a search on the FreeNAS forums or something for recommended hardware https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-Proliant-N40L-Microserver/183765135200?hash=item2ac9416f60:g:b3gAAOSwtLNcqfJe

@6a62 @marmite for personal use ECC is overkill.ZFS has an absurd amount of error correction mechanisms built into it, and nothing about ZFS really needs ECC more than any other filesystemeither way i's say it's overkill for a personal server

@Jessifir @marmite cheap old servers are all gonna have ECC ram anyway though, so it hardly matters

@marmite i have used freenas for years and have had no problem. Its easy to setup and well is free There are some alternatives depending on your usecases. Are all your drives the same size?

@marmite well if your using the same size drives then you dont need a system like unraid instead (which supports different size drives) A big drawback of freenas is you cant expand an existing array in place. so if you dont get all your storage now you cant add more later without copying everything off it and then putting it back on after recreating the array. freenas is very easy to setup and has a good support community. just check their hardware compatibility lists on the forum.

@shivalwolf thank you, that’s really helpful! My storage needs aren’t that dramatically high so I’ll just make sure to get all the storage I need now ^_^

@6a62 @marmite yeahthe power draw on old servers can be immense though, and if it's rack mounted it will probably only support SAS drives, which won't really have the capacity or affordability you'd want.all the servers i've personally seen use Fibre Channel for storage which is a bit outside personal use tooif you so end up going with an old server, just make sure you know it's capabilities.

@marmite the level of redundancy you choose is a factor as well. depending on how paranoid you are and how many drives your throwing in there. Just remember as well that a raid isnt a full backup. its useful for a 1st level backup but any critical data is worth keeping offline as well. i use a raidz2 array so 2 drives lost to redundancy and given i have had 2 drives fail at the same time i am very glad i had it.

@shivalwolf I was planning on having offsite backups too, is there anything else worth doing? Like backing up to some form of external media?

@marmite offsite backup is good. I just have a set of drives that i plug in every so often. sync all my data to them and then take the drives into work and keep them in my draw. If anything ever fails i have a backup recent enough not to worry.Freenas has some nice caching options so you can add a high speed ssd as a cache so it makes read/write faster. to the array. There is also a nice plugin and virtualisation system built in.

@marmite no probs at all. i use the plugin jails to run a a local emby server and a gitlab server. easy to setup with just afew clicks in the UI but theres like 30 plugin containers built in which are afew clicks and install. Oh if your really paranoid it also supports encryption of the array. If you use it make sure you secure backup the keys as there is no chance of recovery without a backup

@Jessifir @6a62 @marmite AFAIK you can plug SATA drives to a SAS controller no problem (it works with the controller I have at work). But if you wanna run ZFS on it, make sure the SAS controller has no builtin hardware RAID, or allows bypassing the builtin RAID (has JBOD mode). Also, old servers will not just draw a lot of power, but also be loud as fuck. A rule of thumb I've heard is: don't buy anything with DDR2 or older.
