@rae @slightlyflightyone I mean, I guess. people are weird. why do people get prince Albert piercings? I think it's weird, but it's not an ethical problem as long as it's consenting adults who know what they're getting themselves into. Infant/child Circumcision is where the problem arises.

@slightlyflightyoneI got the impression that. I mean its traumatic to think about right? If youve had it done, so you gotta internalise that it's okay, build a narrative that "no this is normal i am normal nothing bad happened to me"Then "oh ive got a kid now, better do the same thing because I'm normal so this is normal"

@flout that's so gross. I genuinely can't understand repressing abuse that severely.

@slightlyflightyoneMy parents gave me the explanation that it was somehow "cleaner" or that it has some magical effect towards negating warts or something.Of course, having read into that later on in life, as you might expect, it provides zero measurable benefits in that direction.

@slightlyflightyone @flout I don't get conformism either. I guess that if society works for you in general, then you don't feel you have to ask any hard questions.

@slightlyflightyone From the way it's told. It was/is a Jewish thing and that because doctors were Jewish they just did it. Then modern doctors did it because tradition. [citations needed] [probably a dose of anti-semitism in the articles]My mom explains that it's more clean and reduces infection. This is based on ancient medicine from who knows HOW old when nobody in Europe wanted to take a bath at any regular interval.I also hear that the circumcised 'look' is an ideal or something, so people get it done not to look 'odd'.These are just the things I've heard.

@maverynthia @slightlyflightyone the history of Circumcision in the west has little to do with the jews, actually: https://www.reddit.com/r/Intactivists/wiki/index#wiki_the_history_of_circumcision

@maverynthia yikes. That first one is straight up anti-semitic, also it doesn't come from Europe. Also, whereas I get that last idea (although calling it looking "odd" is gross), like... there's a reason we don't tattoo infants or do other generally irreversible optional aesthetic procedures on folx without them expressing interest first.

@slightlyflightyone Its more than just a religious or cultural rite because 19th century British and American doctors thought foreskins caused a ton of diseases and others saw circumcision as a cure for masturbaton

@slightlyflightyone In some states yes you can. That's why it's messed up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_status_of_tattooing_in_the_United_States

@maverynthia Oh weird. It’s illegal to get a tattoo until you’re 18 where I live specifically to keep parents from doing things like this. Also, piercings can only be facial and belly button piercings until you’re 18.
