In speaking with a friend this morning, I was reminded of how much of an "or" world we live in:- Vim or Emacs- Windows or Linux- Coke or Pepsi- Honey or SugarAd nauseumWhy does it have to be one or the other? Or a single selection from any number of choices?(Obviously some things are truly diametrically opposed/incompatible and this doesn't apply to every situation)Imagine an "and" world. What does it look like to you?

@viciousviscosity All are multiple choice:- Vim/emacs/BBEdit/Atom/nano/ed/thousands of others- Mac/Windows/Linux/BSD/Minix/Haiku/dozens of others- Mr Pibb.- Stevia/other sweeteners (see other discussion)

@viciousviscosity This is a great mental exercise! I don't think I've ever heard it phrased quite this wayre: given examplesdoom-emacs is great and popular and exists at the intersection of emacs and vim, amazing, point provenWindows has simple Linux machines now, again, amazing, point made(spelling these out for myself while thinking through)Now if only there were some sort of super human who could drink both Pepsi and Coke... they'd be unstoppable

@viciousviscosity We talked about this recently in the Unlearning Racism circles I go to. We're working through this document: http://cwsworkshop.org/PARC_site_B/dr-culture.html and last week was "Either/Or Thinking". Some of it is rooted in opportunity cost, but much of it is about power and being able to label people as "other" and "wrong".

@flipI have to admit, I've never actually tried mixing Coke and Pepsi. I guess I've been too conditioned with the OR to even think about it. :blobsmilesweat:

@viciousviscosity Most people have no training in any sort of logic, and thus tend to conflate OR and XOR (eXclusive OR).The difference is that "vi OR emacs" can be "true" if you use both vi and emacs in different situations, and "nintendo XOR sony" is "false" if you use both or neither; you *must* choose one or the other.More details at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exclusive_or

@viciousviscosity honey is easier to produce since you can get bugs to do most of the work for youspacemacs is better than vim AND emacs (best of both imo)coke and pepsi are both flavored corn syrup, no meaningful distinction there imowindows is non-free, but linux+proton is kinda great

@viciousviscosity We're hard-wired to deal with zero-sum games and binary choices, and it's hard to expand to positive-sum and multi-dimensional choices and outcomes. :flan_sad: As to what the better world looks like... think a combination of Trek's Vulcan IDIC philosophy and the Wiccan Rede "An it harm none, do as ye will.".For your TED talk background music may I suggest Pink Floyd's "Us and Them", and Rush's "Half The World"?

@viciousviscosityWindows and Linux work very well together. AD and win DHCP are superior to what I have in *nix land, and that works nicely with a simplified service offering on the *nix side.

@viciousviscosity: inevitably, when you choose J, you implicitly (or explicitly) don't choose (or #antichoose) KChoosing #emacs doesn't preclude choosing #vim another time. But it does preclude choosing it at the particular decision pointEveryone has the same 24 hours in the day: *most* choices are built atop unintentionally-chosen paths; the time it takes to learn K (while already knowing J) is a cost you may or may not be able to bear

@viciousviscosity 'Cause energy saving seems more important than accurate representation of reality? Simple (simplified, though) images are more appealing to our brain?

@xj9 @viciousviscosity Coke goes better with rum (Pepsi is Wrong). Pepsi goes better with lemon (Coke is OK).Non-US Coke and Pepsi are better.

@viciousviscosityA logician would say that "or" encompasses the "and" option inclusively, as well
