reddit's /r/games is doing a shut down to counter " transphobia, homophobia, islamophobia, racism, misogyny, pro-pedophilia/pro-rape" comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/b7ubwm/rgames_is_closed_for_april_fools_find_out_why_in/I mean that's fine and all, but the general method of moderation seems to be pretty dang "social justice" oriented.

Don't get me wrong. A lot of the comment samples they provide are genuinely quite bad and/or tasteless:JzP2Mbg.jpgOvku0ht.jpgS1FGkbd.jpgWxtnJ2Q.jpg

But a huge chunk of the supposedly "hateful" comments seem to just be regular people voicing an opinion. But it's considered hateful simply because the mods on the sub disagree with their opinion:0NCOgEk.pngFtZcfEW.jpgPaSTipL.pngu0NFNme.png

@quad this is pretty much how the new world works now. People imposing their opinions on others and everyone with a different one gets shut down. I've also found myself using reddit rarely nowadays too. It's just gotten real ugly there as time went on..

@sprite_1ww I've never actively posted on Reddit. Periodically a little bit. But I stayed on 4chan, even if some of the stuff was a bit too shitpostey and rude, it was a far more honest and open place. But now it's been slowly infected with the same kind of people so I stopped posting there as well.

@quad Yikes.Yes these are opinions but I feel like spaces like reddit are the worse to express them. People have gotten doxx for tamer things.

@quad Reddit used to be an okay-ish place where people with various opinions for the most part, just stuck to their own little holes but the admins decided it was a great idea to smoke them out, banning subreddits left & right, so now they're just kinda out there and scattered on the surface nowIf people can just get over the initial shock of the Voat general userbase, maybe with enough "normies" joining, they could drown out the few rotten apples there and turn it into what Reddit used to be

@sprite_1ww But honestly, people being able to just make their own little huts to hang out in with people who agree, and keeping all those huts in one place while also seeing other stuff from the site was one of the best selling points of reddit. But too many people are looking for safe spaces now. Or rather echo chambers where their own beliefs are amplified exponentially and they can drown out anyone they don't agree with

@quad Yeah precisely.... Maybe we need a reddit-like alternative that isn't centralized, using the fediverse.. Only issue is getting people to use it

@sprite_1ww problem is that people get confused when there's no central place to both sign up and also use the site.not to mention that if one server were to crash and an entire sub disappear, that's enough to piss plenty of people off so they leave.

@quad like dont get me wrong, a lot of the stuff being said in the album is shitty and these people should be ashamed but gamers in general dont take shit like this kindly and lash out.

@Alumina The gamer community has a history of being a bit elitist. But honestly it's not as bad as people make it out to be. The justice warriors just put way too much bad light on gamers. The gaming community is in a particularly bad spot. The game industry is full of people who spend a lot of time on the internet, and the players also tend to be impressionable people who spend a lot of time online. So the fact that both extreme sides would develop highly in their community isn't surprising. They're stuck in a loop of justice warriors influencing indie game devs (or making indie games themselves) and sometimes managing to influence larger game studios to push their political agendas. Because game devs are probably some of the content creators who keep the most up-to-date about internet opinions on their game.Meanwhile some players strike back in a similar fashion. But the majority of them just stay in the background saying "please stop, let games be art, not a political canvas"

@quad there can be one "big" or "central" instance kinda like how people automatically assume Mastodon.social is the only website that can be signed up for to use Mastodon. What's important is a community can't be completely shut down because some entity decided they want to be the thought police

@sprite_1ww You underestimate normies. Most of them would just leave if that big instance ever decided to disagree with them instead of finding another instance.Plus we'd end up with different problems. We're already seeing this with Mastodon. As justice warriors seal themselves off in whitelist-only echo chambers and only whitelist other instances which further echo their political views.Free speech or not, that's flat out mentally unhealthy. Isolated speech is just as bad, if not worse because it encourages two polar opposite extremes to grow without limit. We won't really find any solution to this problem until we've managed to mix both sides into one bowl and they're co-existing

@quad I mean the past few months, Reddit has been disagreeing with a lot of communities, some of which more than likely have normies in them but they're still there and just bending over to what reddit wants (the loli kerfuffle comes to mind as lots of anime/hentai subreddit got hit with that change)And yeah, you bring up a good point, no matter how we try to make it open for everyone, people are going to figure out ways to contain themselves in their own bubbles 😔

@sprite_1ww Reddit didn't really have that much of an isolation problem. Because there's no straightforward way to "cut connections" between subreddits. You could make invite only subs. But generally there wasn't anything preventing you from seeing popular content on the site or from other subs popping up around the site. Whether that'd be on the front page or as a cross-post.It's simply not healthy for people to only learn one side of the story and to only surround themselves with people who agree. Heck that's probably why most politicians make such stupid decisions.

@quad I think with the way the world is going right now (or is it just the Western countries), things will just escalate more and more. It will need to get to the very extreme first and have things break before people can learn and grow... That or the world is doomed lol, either of the two

@sprite_1ww If WW3 ever starts it's going to be because this stupid political war pushed it to happen, lmao. Or at least it feels that way.I can already imagine that these SJW by some miracle manages to convince a country to nuke some other country because they're homophobic or whatever, then everything just blows up from there.

@schnitzel A bigot is someone who's intolerant towards differing opinions. He can be anti-trans and believe that everyone should be male or female. But as long as he doesn't actively prevent people from holding opposing views or treat them with disdain, he's no bigot.People who call him out as a bigot, simply because he doesn't share their views however, those are "bigots" by definition.
