You know those network issues I mentioned I'd been seeing since the weekend. The whole network link at work just dropped for about 5 minutes. Both Fiber and the ADSL failover. And my mobile carrier went offline for 10 minutes. Like completely offline, they just stopped broadcasting LTE.And they're still offline on LTE, my phone has fallen over to GPRS

I have no idea what's going on, but all of the internet is definitely broken around where I live. Across all ISPs as well. But what confuses me most is that nobody seems to notice. If it was a Tier 1 or Tier 2 issue, then I guess it'd at least be big enough for others to notice. But nobody outside of this area seems to notice, so it must be a Tier 3 issue. But how would a Tier 3 issue kill multiple ISPs at once

And on that note, my phone went offline again and is now in Emergency Calls Only status. And my work phone that's on a different carrier just dropped from LTE to HSPA.What the actual fuck is going on. How do 3 ISPs break at once. And it's obviously not just a routing issue.

@quad do other people in your area notice?

@Wolf480pl I've heard people mention dropped calls and delayed E-mails all week. But otherwise, no.fiber ISPs haven't dropped until these 5 minutes of downtime today though. And my carrier that dropped out entirely is the least popular carrier in the area so I'm not surprised that nobody noticed that one. The most popular carrier is also experiencing issues, but only dropped from LTE to HSPA

@ivesen Three ISPs at once though?Roy must've been really pissed. Especially if he also took Telenor's LTE sender offline, but not their 3G. And also stopped Ice from broadcasting a signal whatsoever.

@quad what boggles my mind is how you're able to post on fedi with no internet connection :^)but my first guess, not knowing too much about enterprise-level networking, would be that there might be a backbone outage?

@kitty No because I'm fairly certain these ISPs mostly don't share backbone. And even if the backbone went down, LTE wouldn't stop broadcasting, it'd just stop routing traffic. And yes, I was unable to shitpost on the fediverse during the 5 minutes where two mobile carriers and our work line went down at the same time

@quad Power outage centralized around the same ISPs and towers? Again, not knowing too much about how they work, it could be that they only have services classed as "emergency" on battery backup, and they might class LTE as non-essential.But, even if that were the case, I would imagine that an ISP would have a pretty heavy duty backup system. Seems really bizarre :(

@kitty It is affecting every single mobile carrier in the area though, and at least two fiber ISPs.The chances that all of those suffer power outages at the same time, all across town, while I haven't heard of any other individual or company suffering a power outage, seems beyond astronomical. Also the reason emergency calling works is because carriers are required to keep their networks open for all emergency calls. Let's say you have Carrier A, but Carrier B and C are also in town. If Carrier A was to completely fail, your phone could still perform emergency calls using Carrier B and C without issue. Even if you don't have a plan from them or anything.

@quad imho a construction worker just cut the wrong cables (not the first time it would happen :/ ). As fiber/adsl does not work, people start using tethering, moving all the load to the mobile networks, overloading them.

@winterthediplomat No but this has been going on all week. Since Sunday. When browsing the internet, one out of every 50 times, a page just won't load. And it doesn't help no matter how much you reload, then 10 seconds later it suddenly just works again. That's typically some routing issue. But now two carriers at the same time entirely stopped broadcasting LTE. Even if their connection was lost of routing buggy, they'd normally still be broadcasting an LTE signal, internet traffic just wouldn't function over it
