@prydt just remember that they are not “failed liberals” that you are trying to fix. They’ll never budge from their core belief to conserve social hierarchies and maintain the greatest force of power https://youtu.be/agzNANfNlTsIn that sense, yeah, USA is pretty good at that, but when it comes to better return on your investments: Canada, New Zealand, Norway, etc are the top of the western countries. However, they’ll never believe that. Those countries are too egalitarian for their taste.

@ilovecomputers one can't really change others opinions, one can only hope to help them change their own opinion but if they arent open-minded nothing will come of it... tbh im not sure fully what my political beliefs are yet, but i do know what i dont agree with :p

@ilovecomputers i mean... ive got friends who go out of their way to read Milton Friedman (not that one shouldnt read him, its just that one shouldnt ONLY read him)... people can research conservationism quite thoroughly and still be in a bubble... the opposite is also true

@prydt yeah when you broaden your literature you find repetitions that help point you into what is more “true”For me, what’s been helpful is reading into what makes policies work. How my government works. What policies have helped some societies succeed over others.

@prydt But yes, even with those facts alone, you could argue that Singapore’s or Rwanda’s flawed democracy or authoritarianism is successful: https://youtu.be/xX0ozxrZlEQThis is where studying humanities (philosophy and history) is important in helping you discover your values. This is why I liked that first video I linked to; does a good job of spelling out the core values of conservatism and liberalism

@ilovecomputers true, but i dont think many people fall into the 100% conservative category and honestly i dont put them above having tons of cognitive dissonances with having conflicting beliefs... honestly studying philosophy is really interesting bc not only do you get tons of good ideas from some of the most known / influential thinkers throughout history but you also get tons of terrible ideas :p

@prydt @ilovecomputers Sounds like it's less about knowing what you disagree with and more about knowing what you've been brainwashed into rejecting. I used to be a socialist and I'm still extremely liberal, yet I'd still rather live in the US than authoritarian shitholes like Canada, Germany or the UK.

@ilovecomputers @prydt "This is where studying humanities (philosophy and history) is important in helping you discover your values" Ah yes, going to a western college where you will be brainwashed and guilt tripped by extremist, literally communist professors into believing that feelings are more important than facts.Go into science or stop wasting your money.
